Horse Racing Tips: Causeway can land Curragh prize

You won't want to miss a thing on Saturday, as the racing is of the highest standard with eight meetings - including the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh - taking place across Britain and Ireland on the day.

My horse racing tips for the afternoon includes two from Haydock, plus another from across the Irish Sea.

14:58 Haydock - Coppull @ 4/1

Clive Cox's COPPULL was a winner on debut at Leicester last spring and ran a cracker to finish second behind the impressive winner Gstaad in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He was plenty keen enough in the early stages too and may well have finished closer if settling better that day. The son of Bated Breath proved that performance was no fluke when going two better in the Group 2 Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood next time.

Getting the better of Puerto Rico that day, Aidan O'Brien's runner-up went on to win two Group 1s in France, including the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.

Coppull finished the season with a very valiant third in the Middle Park Stakes and gained his revenge on conqueror Wise Approach when winning the Commonwealth Cup Trial at Ascot on seasonal debut.

He probably should be a shorter price than this and another big run is anticipated.

15:30 Haydock - American Affair @ 7/1

It was unfortunate that we didn't get to see Jim Goldie's AMERICAN AFFAIR after his victory at Royal Ascot last season but he's back now and hopefully he can pick up where he left off in group races over the minimum trip.

This son of Washington DC began the last campaign as a handicapper, where he won a decent handicap at Musselburgh on his first start. Goldie's gelding then went on to win a better race at York, before lining up in this very race, where he finished fifth.

Horse Racing Odds

His finishing position probably doesn't reflect the performance as he was denied a run at a key stage and was keeping on well. Leaving that run well behind him in the King Charles III Stakes, he became a Group 1 winner, getting the better of Frost At Dawn.

We can forgive a below-par effort on his reappearance in a 6f Group 2 at York last time out as he probably needed the run and his best form has come over the minimum trip.

16:15 Curragh - Causeway @ 10/11

Perhaps one of Aidan O'Brien's most promising and unexposed three-year-olds, CAUSEWAY has progressed with every run so far and the best is surely yet to come. The son of Wootton Bassett has only had four starts so far and is the one to beat in this contest.

It's no surprise that he needed the run on debut last season, as many of the yard's juveniles do, and he left that run well behind him when winning well next time.

He kicked this season off with victory in the Madrid handicap and having won a Listed race here at the Curragh last time, the slight step up in grade will be fine and there could be more to come now trying 1m2f for the first time here.
