Horse Racing Tips: City Derby to relish Cartmel return

Cartmel racecourse

There is lots of racing action in store on Bank Holiday Monday with six meetings taking place across Britain and Ireland.

Jumps cards come from Cartmel, Huntingdon and Ballinrobe (evening) while they race on the level at Windsor, Leicester and Redcar on a busy day. My three best bets for Monday's action are below, including course specialist City Derby on his first visit of the summer to Cartmel.

Horse Racing Tips - Monday, May 26

  • 14:10 Windsor – Mammy @ 14/1
  • 15:30 Cartmel – City Derby @ 14/1
  • 16:55 Huntingdon – Highway One O Five @ 2/1

14:10 Windsor – Mammy @ 14/1

The filly MAMMY has had only two starts since joining the Rachel Cook & John Bridger training alliance from Michael Bell, and the second of those was promising when she finished third at Salisbury (6f, good to firm) earlier this month.

Her peak form for previous connections typically came when ridden positively and she was close to the pace in that contest but settled for a place, with the winner Safari Dream making all for trainer Rod Millman. That one has franked the form by scoring again since at Chelmsford.

Eased another pound in the ratings, this Bated Breath filly is now 6lb lower than when running fourth over this C&D a year ago. She also has Joe Bradnam claiming 7lb in the saddle and is weighted to go close to a first turf win on her seventh start in this sphere.

14:10 Windsor - Winner Mammy

15:30 Cartmel – City Derby @ 14/1

The idiosyncrasies of Cartmel can lend themselves to producing course specialists so it's worth keeping that in mind as the first long weekend of the season concludes at the popular Cumbrian summer jumps circuit.

CITY DERBY established himself as a standing dish at the course last season, winning four from four for Lizzie and Sean Quinlan at 2m6f/3m1½f.

He was equally effective on good and soft ground in that sequence and ran well at Perth and Aintree afterwards before his form tailed off a bit in three outings before the new year.

He may well have needed the run in last month's Carlisle comeback and he now returns to this favoured layout rated just 2lb higher than when last successful.

15:30 Cartmel - Winner City Derby

16:55 Huntingdon – Highway One O Five @ 2/1

Chris & Freddie Gordon won this contest at Huntingdon a year ago with Small Bad Bob and they look to have leading claims again now with HIGHWAY ONE O FIVE.

He has found form this spring, winning at Warwick (2m3f, good) and Uttoxeter (2m, good) in April and at the start of this month.

He got an 8lb hike for the second of those wins and ran well again over the same C&D at the Midlands venue when finishing third in a Novices' Handicap Hurdle nine days ago, outpaced by the front pair as some of the obstacles were omitted late on due to low sun.

He goes back up in trip now, which is a plus, and is eased 2lb by the handicapper. His rider has a 33% strike-rate from his last 15 mounts and they look set to go well here.

16:55 Huntingdon - Winner Highway One O Five
