Horse Racing Tips: London is the one to beat at Brighton

Flat racing dominates proceedings on Monday and all four of the meetings across Britain and Ireland take place on the level, with no National Hunt representation. Carlisle gets us underway in the afternoon and Brighton follows swiftly afterwards, whilst Roscommon and Windsor provide the evening entertainment.

We have three strong fancies to follow across the day and they include a progressive Robert Cowell-trained handicapper at Brighton who should prove hard to beat.

14:45 Brighton - London Is Blue @ 6/5

Nurseries can be tricky puzzles to solve but it’s often wise to go for a progressive type and Robert Cowell’s LONDON IS BLUE certainly fits that profile. This son of Territories has progressed nicely since switching to handicaps and there could well be more to come.

He didn’t show a great deal in three runs in maiden company but it was a much improved display on handicap debut at Yarmouth a couple of starts ago. The well handicapped winner has since gone on to win another two races so the form looks pretty solid.

Progressing again over course and distance last time out, he travelled strongly throughout and pulled clear in the closing stages to score by two-and-a-half lengths. There was lots to like about that performance and he’s clearly going the right way.

The handicapper certainly didn’t miss it however but it’s hard to argue with a 7lb rise, given the level of dominance he displayed. Further progress seems likely and this looks like a good opportunity to earn a second career victory.

Charlie Johnston runs handicap debutante ICE SOVEREIGNS and she has only had three starts thus far. Fourth of eight on debut at Newmarket in July, that form has worked out reasonably well, with a couple of subsequent winners coming out of it.

She perhaps struggled in the testing conditions at Goodwood next time but still managed to finish third and the winner has since run well in Group 3 company. Johnston’s filly absolutely bolted up over course and distance last time out and that performance was excellent.

Pulling five lengths clear of the runner-up, that effort suggests she’s going the right way and further progress can’t be ruled out. An opening mark of 81 isn’t massively generous but her victory most recently suggests she should be more than capable of coming out on top.

Edward Bethell is a very promising trainer and his runner ORANGESANDLEMONS has a very consistent profile on the whole. She was perhaps inconvenienced by the draw at Doncaster most recently and that sixth-place finish was a little out of character.

It was a much better display over course and distance before that and she was narrowly denied off a mark of 75, which is the same as her current rating. A reproduction of that form would put her bang in the mix once again and a return to form is anticipated.

This daughter of Mayson won a novice over a mile in good style back in February and she’s equally as competitive over 7f. She has finished second in six of her eight starts thus far and winning more races shouldn’t be beyond her.
