York racecourse

Flat racing holds sway across the UK and Ireland on Friday with eight meetings taking place across the afternoon and into the evening.

First off is Uttoxter, joined in the afternoon by the action from Ascot and Thirsk, while there are meetings at Kilbeggan, Cork, Chepstow, York and Sandown through to the evening. Amongst our Friday fancies is one for trainer Ralph Beckett, who arrives at York still unexposed after some top-class efforts in extremely good races.

17:30 York - Ash Wednesday @ 12/1

Heather Main’s gelding ASH WEDNESDAY has an excellent record on the all-weather, winning six out of 10 attempts so far. But it’s been interesting to watch his campaign this summer; with connections attempting to see if he can replicate his all-weather prowess over the turf.

With two attempts so far on turf this season, it was his last run at Goodwood that caught the eye. He travelled smoothly into the race and attempted to make his challenge against the rail. However, he was severely hampered in doing so and couldn’t recover, finishing fourth.

The handicapper hasn’t reduced his mark, but he is drawn well and looks like his first victory on turf won’t be too far away.

18:12 Cork - Keke @ 10/3

Edward Lynam’s gelding KEKE arrives at Cork in great form as he was last seen winning a Premier Handicap at the Curragh on Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby weekend.

On that day, he travelled nicely into the race, making his challenge a furlong from home. He was always doing enough and kept on well inside the final 110yds. Today’s re-opposer, Red Evolution, finished second that day.

Last season, Lynam’s gelding went on a bit of a roll, winning three competitive handicaps in quick succession, and finished the season well, winning another Premier handicap at the Curragh.

He should be able to confirm that form with Red Evolution now as he could prove too tough to peg back.

19:48 York - Revoir @ 5/2

Ralph Beckett's filly REVOIR remains relatively unexposed, with only three career starts so far.

She was last seen finishing sixth in the Betfred Oaks Group 1. She travelled smoothly for most of the race, but the distance didn't suit, so dropping back by 1 1/2f should be a benefit. That was still a good run, and many connections of great fillies have gambled on taking a chance in the Oaks, so it's no real negative.

What possibly aided connections' decision to take a chance in the Oaks was her fantastic run first time out this season in the Childwickbury trial race at Newbury. That's a listed contest and she travelled nicely into contention, just denied in the closing strides by a short-head.

That form has substance as the winner, Qilin Queen, was last seen winning a Group 2 at Longchamp.

If Revoir can replicate her effort in the Childwickbury trial, she should be very hard to beat.
