Haydock park racecourse

Eight meetings - seven on the flat and one over jumps - take place across the UK & Ireland on Friday.

I've studied the cards and come up with three horse racing tips for consideration, headlined by an old warrior for trainer David O'Meara who won the same race last year.

Horse Racing Tips - Friday, July 18

  • 14:05 Haydock - Young Fire @ 10/1
  • 15:15 Haydock - Raffles Angel @ 6/1
  • 18:45 Pontefract - Mudamer @ 11/2

14:05 Haydock - Young Fire @ 10/1

Despite his advancing years, YOUNG FIRE cannot be ignored at Haydock as his record there is exceptional, including the first of two wins last year which came in this race off a 5lb higher mark.

He hasn’t managed to get very close since his last win in September last year, but his RPRs in his most recent outings are encouraging for supporters, especially as they have come at 1m2f.

Eleven of his 12 victories to date have come at distances between 7f and a mile, including his five wins from ten starts at Haydock, so the return to this trip should see him in a better light.

New jockey Conor Whiteley will be having his first ride in Britain, but he has looked tidy in five starts in Ireland and his 7lb could prove very useful in this apprentice contest.

15:15 Haydock - Raffles Angel @ 6/1

RAFFLES ANGEL looked a horse running into form at Chepstow last time and, with this race containing quite a few who were probably looking for softer ground, he can strike on his third run of the season.

He was progressive last season for Rae Guest, striking three times over six furlongs on quick ground, the last of them coming from a mark of 72.

After his two runs this year he is now only 2lb higher, and gave notice at Chepstow last time that he was approaching peak form and that his rating is not insurmountable.

He was easy to back before that run, and wasn’t given too hard a time once his winning chance had gone, still beaten less than two lengths at the line and he can get back on the winning trail today.

18:45 Pontefract - Mudamer @ 11/2

Although hat-trick seeking Style Of Life is well-drawn to attack in stall 1, MUDAMER is well-drawn to pounce from the next stall and can get back on the scoresheet.

He was backed into favourite on his fourth outing of the year and that faith looked likely to be justified for most of the race, until he was mugged near the line.

It was a similar story last time, when he looked to be coming with a winning run only to flatten out close home, the ease with which he finished the subject of a stewards enquiry.

If Jack Garritty can follow the pacesetting Style Of Life late into the race and leave his challenge until as late as possible up the stiff Pontefract finish, the pair can come home on top.
