Horse Racing Daily Double: Blaze to catch fire

There’s afternoon Flat action from Lingfield and Bath on Wednesday, but we focus on the two evening cards for our daily double, the selections coming at Hamilton’s twilight fixture and under the lights on the AW at Kempton.
Horse Racing Daily Double - Wednesday, September 3

19:45 Hamilton - Royal Blaze @ 7/2
The concluding 0-58 handicap at Hamilton on Wednesday evening represents a step back up in class for Ewan Williams’ ROYAL BLAZE, but the four-year-old comes here in good form following a ready win in classified company at Ayr and he looks one of the likelier types in a race where few can be seriously fancied.
The son of Muhaarar started out with Marcus Tregoning, winning a Leicester nursery for that trainer off a mark of 66 and reaching a career high rating of 74 as a three-year-old.
He regressed rapidly after moving to this yard last winter, tumbling from 70 to 48 in the ratings in just six starts for Williams. However, that brought about the chance to contest classified company for the first time over 1m2f at Ayr last month and he made short work of his rivals, pulling readily clear inside the final furlong.
This extra furlong is unknown for him, but hit the line strongly at Ayr and should represent some value against Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore’s Jaminoz, who bids to repeat his win in this race last season off a 2lb higher mark.

20:30 Kempton - Marquis Pompeo @ 4/1
Charlie Johnston’s MARQUIS POMPEO is still a work in progress, but he took a big step forward when winning on his third start at Wolverhampton last month and may have been underestimated by the assessor ahead of his handicap debut.
Like many of Johnston’s string this year, the selection is big and raw, but he left in inauspicious debut run at Newcastle behind when finishing a never-nearer third over 6f at Leicester in July and improved plenty on that when scoring by the minimum margin, upped to this trip at Dunstall Park 24 days earlier.
He benefited from a positive ride on that occasion and had virtually nothing in hand of the odds-on favourite and 75-rated Polygramm at the line.
However, he’s got size and scope in abundance and makes obvious appeal off this opening mark of 79, having run to a Racing Post Rating of 84 last time.
Richard Hannon’s Wild Clary wasn’t winning out of turn at Southwell last month and should be competitive off this mark of 78 with confidence buoyed.
Stuart Williams is churning out the winners with regularity at present and Preanka is another worthy of consideration.
The daughter of Make Believe is unexposed after only three starts and, while an absence of 184 days isn’t ideal, she did win impressively on her debut for Alice Haynes at two, so clearly goes well fresh.
