Haydock park racecourse

Saturday brings with it a wide-range of UK and Irish race meetings, eight to be exact, for us to enjoy. Just like Friday, I'm drawn to the action at Haydock Park, where there's a six-race card in store.

Below you will find my three Haydock Park Tips for Saturday, July 19.

Haydock Park Tips - Saturday, July 19

  • 18:25 Haydock Park - Solanna @ 6/1
  • 18:55 Haydock Park - Carlysle Square @ 10/3
  • 20:00 Haydock Park - Tactical Plan @ 10/3

18:25 Haydock Park - Solanna @ 6/1

The action at Haydock kicks off with this Class 5 handicap over 1m 2f, with a stacked field of 12 runners declared. There are a few notable candidates to consider, but my choice on current form is SOLANNA.

This six-year-old son of Helmet and Night Lily has enjoyed three consecutive AW second-place finishes at Chelmsford (same trip), Kempton and Lingfield (both 1m 4f), with the latest coming at the beginning of June.

The gelding is well-accustomed to these distances and recent form suggests he will be in the running on his return to Haydock after three years away. He has four career wins over this distance which also helps his case.

One concern is the weather. If the forecast is to be accurate, rain could hamper his chances, as rain-softened ground saw him withdrawn in Spring. For that reason, I'd consider him as an each-way selection.

18:55 Haydock Park - Carlysle Square @ 10/3

CARLYSLE SQUARE landed her maiden success at Leicester last time out in June, over the same distance as Friday's Class 5 handicap at Haydock. The three-year-old posted a respectable second over C&D prior to that triumph in May.

All three handicap starts have been respectable and trainer Julie Camacho will be hoping the filly can push on now with that first victory under her belt. Carlysle Square has been a part of Camacho's yard since February, after leaving William Haggas' charges, and there have been promising improvements in her five starts since.

If rainy conditions are set for Haydock, this will be an interesting obstacle for her but based on current form, you'd expect her to be in the thick of it. A strong contender.

20:00 Haydock Park - Tactical Plan @ 10/3

This Class 4 handicap is where I draw my selections to a close. Nine runners are declared for this one over 7f and there are a handful who have strong claims. The one who catches my eye is TACTICAL PLAN for Ed Dunlop's yard.

The three-year-old has two victories over this distance (Chester and Goodwood) with both coming last season. His first two appearances this season were not the best - a fifth place finish out of nine at Haydock over 1m, and 11th of 14 at Chester over 7 1/2f.

Significant improvement shown at Ayr last time out as he finished second of 12 over 6f and Dunlop will be hoping he can push on from here. The return to 7f should suit him on Saturday but the main reason why I think he could be a shrewd selection is because any rain would be considered a bonus and may just play into his hands.
