Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Runners Guide

Wendrock (Gordon Elliott/Jack Kennedy) @ 16/1

Leopardstown winner at Christmas over this trip and cannot be harshly judged having taken in a Grade 1 back there last month. Interesting handicap debutant.

Murcia (Willie Mullins/Rachael Blackmore) @ 11/1

Pleasing second at Navan last month on second outing after joining Willie Mullins from France, this Doctor Dino filly should be well suited by this stiff track.

Sony Bill (Willie Mullins/Paul Townend) @ 10/1

Plenty of experience, including two wins, in France and has twice shaped well in graded races in Ireland won by leading Triumph contender Hello Neighbour since joining this top team. Handicap bow.

Stencil (Noel George & Amanda Zetterholm/James Reveley) @ 5/1

Two from three in France over hurdles and nothing to be ashamed of when finishing second to Triumph Hurdle favourite East India Dock here on Trials Day in January. Opening mark looks fair.

Total Look (Gavin Cromwell/Keith Donoghue) @ 6/1

Navan winner on hurdles bow in November and has run well in both starts since. Fitted with cheekpieces for the first time now and can go well despite the handicapper applying pressure.

Puturhandstogether (Joseph O'Brien/Mark Walsh) @ 7/1

Trainer has won this race twice since 2019 and this Cork maiden hurdle winner has since run well when second at Fairyhouse in novice company. Goes handicapping with scope for better.

Slurricane (Ross O'Sullivan/Tom Harney) @ 25/1

He wasn't winning out of turn when scoring in a Punchestown handicap in January off an opening mark of 115 but plenty of things went right for him and more will be needed in this company.

Robbies Rock (Gavin Cromwell/Conor Stone-Walsh) @ 25/1

Very easy winner at Cork in December on handicap bow and took a rise in the ratings for that. Not disgraced in Listed Limerick handicap at Christmas but has more on his plate again now.

Quantock Hills (Warren Greatrex/Harry Cobden) @ 16/1

French import showed promising form in first three starts for this handler, including a dead-heat alongside Teriferma here in December with Total Look just behind. Well held on Trials Day, leaving the demand for more progress.

Teriferma (Jack Jones/Sean Bowen) @ 20/1

Ex-Joseph O'Brien inmate, dead-heated with Quantock Hills here on stable bow in December but has plenty to find with Stencil on their Trials Day meeting in January.

Holy See (William Durkan/Oakley Brown) @ 20/1

Night Of Thunder gelding has run well in a trio of Irish hurdles starts since arriving from France without winning. Cheekpieces added for handicap debut and he could be an improver.

Turn And Finish (Harry Derham/Paul O'Brien) @ 28/1

Son of Derby winner Wings Of Eagles, he failed to score in five hurdles starts for Joseph O'Brien but altered that when odds-on in Catterick stable bow in January. More needed in new headgear.

Liam Swagger (James Owen/Sam Twiston-Davies) @ 16/1

Smart Flat performer won his first two over timber and might be 3-3 if he'd been more fluent at Newbury in December. Warmed up with a win on the level at Southwell and on a nice mark if his technique has been worked on.

Solar Drive (Paul Flynn/Gavin Brouder) @ 33/1

Irish maiden hurdle winner has shown ability in all four starts over timber and was second to talented St Pancras in the Scottish Triumph Hurdle last month. He could progress again on handicap bow.

Luker's Tipple (Andrew Kinirons/Sean O'Keefe) @ 20/1

Second behind a couple of promising rivals at Punchestown and Cork before falling when right in contention in the Scottish Triumph Hurdle last month. Opening mark looks fair, if there are no ill-effects from that tumble.

Kool One (Conor Maxwell/Ivan Ryan) @ 40/1

Twice-placed in maidens at Naas and Gowran Park before improving to be second in a Grade 3 at the latter venue last month behind Bacchanalian. In at the deep end on handicap bow.

Mister Cessna (Fergal O'Brien/Jonathan Burke) @ 50/1

He has some solid French form in the book and while he was pulled up on his UK bow at Chepstow in the Grade 2 Finale in December, he has run well since at Ludlow behind Viyanni. This calls for more.

Beyond Your Dreams (Joseph O'Brien/JJ Slevin) @ 6/1

Trainer won this race last year and after missing out in a pair of maiden hurdles in November, this filly made it third time lucky at Fairyhouse in December. Off since but this has been the plan and appears on a nice mark with cheekpieces fitted.

Moutarde (Anthony Charlton/Callum Pritchard) @ 50/1

Dual hurdles winner earlier this season and was in the process of running a huge race in the Scottish Triumph Hurdle last time before coming down at the last. Has to bounce back from that in stronger company.

Static (Donald McCain/Charlie Maggs) @ 40/1

French import with some promising early runs this season, including here in November, but has come up shy in better company since Christmas and has left Olly Murphy to join this handler.

Hot Fuss (Tom Dascombe/David Bass) @ 11/1

He gave Triumph Hurdle favourite East India Dock something to think about at Wincanton in October and then won at Sandown next time. Didn't happen in the Finale at Chepstow over Christmas but easy all-weather winner en route here and very dangerous to discount now with blinkers tried.

Lavender Hill Mob (James Owen/Jamie Brace) @ 40/1

Winner at Warwick in January but twice held since at Haydock and Huntingdon when favourite. Will need to jump better on handicap bow but stable is in cracking form.

Verdict

Hot Fuss @ 12/1 & Liam Swagger @ 16/1

French raider Stencil heads the market following final declarations and is a key player, while Beyond Your Dreams and Puturhandstogether help to give owner JP McManus a strong hand.

HOT FUSS ran well behind Triumph Hurdle favourite East India Dock at Wincanton on jumping bow and followed up nicely at Sandown. His Christmas run at Chepstow can be forgiven and he warmed up well for this on the Flat. A mark of 122 is appealing and he can improve in the new headgear.

James Owen has a strong juvenile team and LIAM SWAGGER is another with scope for better from a decent mark, especially if his hurdling technique has been given a brush-up since Newbury in December.
