Cheltenham Day 1 Lucky 15 Tips: Dashing Danny can make the difference

Day 1, Prestbury Park, Cheltenham. The talking is almost over, and it's time to deliver.
Our Lucky 15 tips could hardly come from anywhere else, now could they - and I'm swerving the Festival hotpots in search of some good old-fashioned each-way value. The action starts at 13:20, and is likely to be somewhere between gripping and epic. Enjoy!
Cheltenham Day 1 Lucky 15 Tips - Tuesday, March 11
- 14:00 - Jango Baie @ 7/1
- 14:40 - Whistle Stop Tour @ 10/1
- 16:40 - Murcia @ 12/1
- 17:20 - Captain Cody @ 15/2
(prices accurate at time of publication, and can fluctuate)
14:00 - Jango Baie @ 7/1
The Arkle might be short on runners but it definitely isn't in terms of quality. I've previewed this one and laid out the prospects for Nicky Henderson's Jango Baie in a companion piece which can be accessed right HERE.
As I alluded to in the intro, I'm suggesting an each-way play with today's Lucky 15 and fingers crossed that this first leg gets us off to a flyer.
14:40 - Whistle Stop Tour @ 10/1
The Ultima now, a proper staying test for high-quality handicappers over 3m 1f.
The selection is trained by the marvellous Lucinda Russell up in Perth and Kinross, with more than a little help from a couple of generations of Scudamores; partner Peter and his son Michael.
Whistle Stop Tour is a seven-year-old Irish-bred gelding who is proving to be a much better chaser than hurdler. In January up at Ayr he ran a career-best at just short of this distance, winning with a degree of authority.
Interestingly he then dropped down to 2m 4.5f at this track, his first and only visit thus far, later in the month. At a trip that is palpably short of his optimum he fared pretty much as one would imagine in mid-div, but got some crucial course reconnaissance in along the way. I'm guessing he was put away and wrapped up for this immediately afterwards.
As a prep it might prove to be inspired - and we're paying six places each-way, which won't harm our prospects given we're playing our bet that way today.
16:40 - Murcia @ 12/1
Willie Mullins trains (one of two for the peerless handler), and Rachael Blackmore rides.
Murcia is a four-year-old filly by hardy, talented G1-winning sire Doctor Dino. The French-bred joined Willie from across the channel in the summer and has had just two races - highly-tried in a Leopardstown G2 at Christmas, then exploding into the picture with a narrow neck defeat at Naas in a race that's been a good yardstick for this test in years gone by (winner's gone in again since, and it was 8l back to the third).
Looks to have a superb e/w shout in what's obviously a very competitive affair, and don't forget how forward and relatively precocious these French-breds often are.
17:20 - Captain Cody @ 15/2
Another WP Mullins conveyance, this time ridden by his nephew Danny.
Captain Cody has three wins from 12 career starts, and encouragingly his last run was the best of his career so far - a close third to Gordon Elliott's Three Card Brag at Naas, and that winner is hopefully Aintree-bound for a tilt at the National.
We're taking it on trust, as with so many, that the extreme trip of 3m 6f is within compass, but he rallied and finished strongly the last day and he's had since January 18 to prepare for this acid test of his staying credentials.
The jockey is utterly fearless, quite brilliant, and rides the horse for the first time. Could be a match made in heaven, and we're paying five places, so a nice bit of wriggle-room is built-in.
This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!
The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.25p each-way Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £3,600 for your total £7.50 stake.
