The two-day Betfred Derby Festival at Epsom begins on Friday with a seven-race card that features the first of this weekend's two Classic races - the Betfred Oaks.

Find my fancies for the big race here, but stay tuned for my Epsom tips for other contests on Day 1.

If the Betfred Oaks is the main event, then the Coronation Cup is a superb support act.

Five go to post for the Group 1 over 1m4f, with last year's winner Emily Upjohn for John & Thady Gosden heading the market at time of publication. She has an obvious chance, but she's prone to a flop or two and mightn't be suited by the ground if the forecast rain falls.

Luxembourg is generally a lot more consistent but comes here on the back of the worst run of his career and not necessarily wanting this far of a trip -  and while Hamish's name can be found under the word consistency in the dictionary, almost all of his form is at a lower level. I suspect he'll find it a little bit too hot.

Likewise, Time Lock has it all to prove at this level - so that leaves French raider FEED THE FLAME.

The four-year-old son of Kingman enjoyed an impressive debut season at home last year, winning the G1 Grand Prix De Paris a couple of runs before finishing a respectable eighth, beaten exactly six lengths by the impressive winner Ace Impact, in the Arc.

He returned this term with a lacklustre effort in heavy ground at Longchamp over 1m2f, but improved dramatically over course and distance a matter of weeks later when third, beaten just half a length, in Group 1 company.

This step back up to 1m4f should suit Pascal Bary's colt, he should be fine in any conditions and while further improvement is needed, that's highly possible given how lightly-raced he is.

17:10 - Zoum Zoum @ 9/4

The penultimate race on the card is the Surrey Stakes - a Listed affair for three-year-olds over seven furlongs - which can go to Ralph Beckett's ZOUM ZOUM.

He was unbeaten as a juvenile, winning two classy novice contests before a comfortable triumph in a Listed event over in France in November to round off the season.

His comeback run in the G3 Greenham Stakes at Newbury last month was a solid one, dead-heating for second behind the 107-rated Esquire.

For me, he sets the standard in this field of seven and with improvement to come both for fitness after his last run and generally as a lightly-raced three-year-old, I'm very hopeful about his chances here.
