Betfred Oaks 2024 Betting Tips

On Friday afternoon (16:30), 12 fillies go to post at Epsom aiming to land the prestigious Betfred Oaks and write their name into racing's history books.

Who's the Classic choice? I've done my best to answer that very question, offering up a couple of Epsom Oaks Tips for your consideration.

  • Ylang Ylang @ 2/1
  • Dance Sequence e/w (4 places) @ 18/1

Aidan O'Brien is just three away from equalling Robert Robson's record of 13 Oaks wins - and he can close the gap by one on Friday.

While coming from the widest stall (12) isn't ideal, I think his Frankel filly YLANG YLANG has enough in hand over her rivals for it not to matter.

She wasn't the most consistent juvenile, but the ability she showed either of side of two underwhelming efforts in September is for me as high as anything in this field.

Her comfortable Group 3 scalp at Leopardstown in the summer has aged very well, with the runner-up Vespertilio now rated 113 having placed in a couple of Group 1s - while her statement success in the G1 Fillies' Mile at Newmarket in October, which catapulted her to the top of the Epsom Oaks Odds, was arguably the strongest piece of form recorded by a two-year-old filly all year.

As such, she was fairly well-fancied for the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket earlier this month despite the likelihood that she'd need further than a mile this term.

I thought she ran a huge race at HQ. She stayed on strongly under Ryan Moore, who maintains the partnership on Friday, to finish just a length behind the eventual winner. That was a brilliant trial for what I assume has been her main target since returning to training.

Like most of O'Brien's runners, she should come on for that - and the ground, which is forecast to be on the slower side, ought to suit also.

For me, she's the proven Group 1 horse still with plenty of upside in a field of mainly unproven, lightly-raced fillies and I'm convinced she is a solid favourite.

Then, from an each-way angle, I'll be having a small wager on DANCE SEQUENCE - the only runner for Charlie Appleby/Godolphin.

After an unbeaten two-year-old campaign which included Group 3 honours, the daughter of Dubawi was right atop the betting for the Betfred Oaks. However, she was then beaten at 10/11f on her seasonal reappearance at Newmarket and drifted, before taking another walk following an underwhelming attempt in the 1000 Guineas.

There is every chance she simply hasn't trained on, but for me there's not yet enough evidence to confidently suggest that, so I'm willing to put that Guineas down as a one-off and give her another chance.

How she'll cope with the extra distance is a complete unknown, but she's a bigger price than some rivals who have achieved significantly less and so, at time of publication, I think she's the standout each-way option with Betfred paying four places.
