It’s Cambridgeshire day at Newmarket on Saturday, featuring a high quality eight-race card from the headquarters of British horse racing. There are another six meetings across the UK & Ireland, with the action running from 13:25-20:30.

Among our horse racing tips for Saturday is one for trainer Tim Easterby who appeared to be crying out for a step up to a mile at Ayr last time out.

14:15 Ripon - Bearin Up @ 2/1

Tim Easterby is the top trainer at Ripon, sending out an impressive 71 winners at the venue over the past five seasons, including in this very race 12 months ago courtesy of Law Degree.

He’s doubly represented this time around by Fairydale and BEARIN UP and preference readily given to the latter, who has caught the eye a couple of times this term and should benefit from the step up to a mile.

The daughter of Kodi Bear has generally been very consistent, running to Racing Post Ratings of between 57 and 66 in each of her five starts, the highest of those figures achieved when third over 6f here in August.

She was slowly away over 7f at Ayr last time and was always on the back foot as a result, but she stuck to her task and was beaten a respectable margin.

She’s now 2lb lower and has solid claims under David Allan, with this extra furlong a definite plus.

14:35 Curragh - Al Haarith @ 4/1

The Joseph O’Brien-trained AL HAARITH was a major eyecatcher when third on his debut over 7f here in June.

He didn’t find the amount of improvement most had anticipated when fourth over the same course-and-distance last month, he still showed plenty and could prove the value in the Group 2 Beresford Stakes.

The 475,000gns son of Lope De Vega colt kept on well from the back on his introduction, chasing home Aidan O’Brien’s Dorset (fourth in a Group 1 subsequently) and Benvenuto Cellini (has won twice since, including a Group 2) at the end of June.

He was sent off as favourite on his next start, but proved rather one-paced behind the reopposing Geryon.

However, he still matched his debut Racing Post Rating of 83 and warrants another chance to confirm that promise, this step up to a mile sure suit given his pedigree.

15:40 Newmarket - Tribal Chief each-way @ 5/2

David Menusier’s TRIBAL CHIEF showed rapid progression last season and that’s continued into this year, the four-year-old posting a career-best effort when winning at Goodwood last month under Sean Leavy.

A five-time winner from only 15 starts, he’s gone from 61 to 94 in the ratings, but still has the potential for further improvement - his run here behind Bullet Point in April was nothing short of remarkable, having appeared to have lost all chance when walking out of the stalls.

Slow starts have been an issue on more than one occasion, but he got away on terms last time and looks tailor-made for what is likely to be a fast-run 1m1f as Leavy retains the ride.
