Brighton Tips: Starsong can shine bright again

Brighton racecourse

The penultimate card of the flat season from Brighton takes place on Tuesday afternoon with seven races for punters to get stuck into, starting at 14:15 and racing through until 17:15.

It is pretty low-grade stuff, with four of the five handicaps class six contests, but there is an intriguing two-year-old maiden taking place at 15:15 with a number of big stables represented. We have three fancies at the Sussex track, with Aaron Ashley believing that course-and-distance form could be vital given the quirky undulations.

Brighton Tips - Tuesday, October 7

  • 14:45 Brighton - Starsong each-way @ 2/1
  • 15:15 Brighton - A Taste Of Glory @ 7/4
  • 15:45 Brighton - Irezumi each-way @ 15/2

14:45 Brighton - Starsong each-way @ 2/1

Starsong won an apprentice handicap over 5½f at this track eight days ago and that means he is able to race off the same mark as he bids to follow up.

The six-year-old won’t be able to call upon the services of Mason Paetel’s 3Ib claim but having the more experienced Jason Watson on board is no bad thing and he is a course-and-distance winner off 2Ib lower, so the return to 6f is unlikely to hinder him.

Starsong is versatile in the way he can be ridden, which is another string to his bow, and he has also been placed over seven furlongs at Brighton so should be finishing well when others start to fade.

Michael Appleby’s charge has won off marks in the 60’s on three occasions, so remains well treated off a mark of 53, and if in the same vein as last week then he should go close.

15:15 Brighton - A Taste Of Glory @ 7/4

Ciarrai Abu is likely to be a warm order on his first start for Harry Eustace, having belied odds of 100/1 to finish a respectable sixth in a Curragh maiden on his debut for Jarlath  Fahey.

However, on breeding he is likely to need a much stiffer test in time and he faces a fascinating rival in A Taste Of Glory, who could make it a day to remember for Watson on Tuesday.

Andrew Balding does excellently well with his juveniles and the son of Soldier Hollow could be primed to strike on his third start, having shown plenty in finishing fourth in two competitive maidens at Kempton and Goodwood.

Ten furlongs on soft ground probably stretched A Taste Of Gold at Goodwood last time out but he was still beaten just over four lengths and the first and second were well-bred sorts - hailing from the Ralph Beckett and Charlie Appleby yards.

15:45 Brighton - Irezumi each-way @ 15/2

A few have their stamina to prove over this 1m3f198y trip but Irezumi is not one of those and he is dangerously well-treated off a mark of 51 if able to put two disappointing efforts behind him.

Nineteen of Irezumi’s 36 runs have come at Brighton and he loves the unique nature of the track, having finished third or better here on 10 occasions.

The ground was probably softer than ideal when racing here 22 days ago, but he has been given time to freshen up by trainer Jim Boyle and he was second off 2Ib higher only four runs ago.

15:45 Brighton - Winner
Irezumi
