15:49 Oxford - Start The Engine (T4) @ SP

Track champion START THE ENGINE returns here after a disappointing trial at Dunstall Park.

As they say in horse racing, it's 'horses for courses' as this runner loves it with a record of 12 wins from 14 races - and nine from 10 in open races. Those are great stats.

T1 is the big danger to us on the draw alone. They boast excellent form and times are on par with ours, so we'll have to look lively at the start to be able to pace up and clear this runner before the bend.

T2 had their first outing back here for a while last week and ran really well, recording a quick 26.54. Has been at Swindon recently with mixed results - but prior to that they won two A1s here in quick times. They're also one to watch.

T3 really wants the rails and will edge across all the way up the run up. She ran well over six bends here last week and her trial at Dunstall Park the week before was also good. May lack a yard of early pace, but if all leaders come together at the bend she may be able to bide her time and come through late.

T5 is a true middle runner, but one with a bit to find on these in terms of form and times. The amount of competition for the lead today will also mean they have nowhere to go heading into the first bend. I can't see them featuring.

Finally, we've got a consistent type in T6 that has a favourable draw on the outside. If there's crowding on the inner, this one could swoop round the outside and miss it all - but again, I don't see that happening.

All in all we've got a good launch pad to pace up after the break and should have lots of room to clear on the run to the bend, with T1, T2 and T3 potentially moving across, to go on and win handsomely.

17:19 Sheffield - Carrick Fergie (T3) @ SP

CARRICK FERGIE comes into this Steel City Cup first-round heat fresh after a lay-off, which is ideal as she seems to always run well in those circumstances.

We whizzed round Sunderland in a two-bend trial last week, clocking 15.47. That ought to put her spot on.

In T1 is a Sunderland raider with a really good record at his home track. But today represents a totally different kettle of fish and I feel his role won't stand up to at least a couple in today's lineup.

T2 is another North East raider who two runs ago clocked a very fast time for the 450m trip. However, this runner is normally slowly away and stays on, so that might have been a bit of a freak break. I can't see them leading us today, or T4, and therefore I don't envisage them being involved in the finish.

T4 is our main danger and likely to be an odds-on favourite - but when I compare our course-and-distance form there's nothing in it. In fact, our times look stronger and at the likely prices I favour us over this one.

T5 has been travelling to Doncaster, Towcester and Hove, boasting decent form without being top class. I see them struggling against this calibre of opposition.

Finally, T6 is a solid runner but I would say he saves his best form for Newcastle. Had some good spins in competitions recently though, making the final at Monmore and Doncaster, so can't be ruled out.

Crucially, the selection is drawn inside of T4 today so we can gain first run on that dog. If we do that and come round the first bend untouched, I can't see anything catching us. Even if T4 gets out in front, I feel we're too strong.

17:19 Sheffield - Winner
Carrick Fergie (T3)
