Wigan stevenage predictions betting tips league 1 tuesday september 2024

League 1 returns on Tuesday night as Wigan Athletic host Stevenage at The Brick Community Stadium (19:45, Sky Sports+). Shaun Maloney’s men have kept three clean sheets in their last four games, and followed up a 4-0 success over Bristol Rovers with a 0-0 stalemate at Lincoln last time out.

Stevenage, like their hosts, have also accumulated seven points in six league matches in 2024/25, but are still searching for their first win on the road. Below you can find my Wigan vs Stevenage predictions, featuring team news and betting tips.

Wigan vs Stevenage Betting Tips

  • Wigan to win to nil @ 11/4
  • Joe Hugill to score @ 11/5

Team News

After being named in the team of the week, Will Aimson will continue at the heart of the Wigan defence and we can expect an unchanged back four after another clean sheet. Sam Tickle is arguably the best goalkeeper in the division, and he will start behind Aimson and Jason Kerr.

Jamie’s son James Carragher has done well at right-back with Liverpool loanee Luke Chambers playing on the other side of the defence. Joe Hugill should lead the line for Maloney but his manager will want to see more attacking threat from his side, after they came up slightly short in the final third against Lincoln.

Meanwhile, Stevenage will look to rely upon Carl Piergianni at the back, but there are fears his defensive partner Charlie Goode has suffered a serious injury. He was taken off against Exeter and left the game in a protective boot, so Lewis Freestone is likely to switch to the middle of defence, with Dan Butler the likely replacement at left-back.

Wigan vs Stevenage Odds

Wigan are priced at 11/8 to win this game, with Stevenage available at 21/10. A draw can be backed at 11/5, over 2.5 goals is 11/10 and BTTS is 4/5.

Wigan to win to nil @ 11/4

Wigan have been rock-solid at the back of late, and also gave Birmingham a good test in their only defeat of the last month. The Blues needed a 91st-minute winner to secure all three points against Wigan and Maloney’s men are slowly growing into the season. I will back them to keep a clean sheet here based on their strong backline, and the quality of Mr Tickle between the sticks.

I also think they will have enough to secure the win, with Hugill and Theo Aasgaard providing the attacking threat. With Goode out for the visitors, I think they will be slightly shaky at the back, so the home side can take full advantage and win this one to nil.

Joe Hugill to score @ 11/5

Hugill scored twice in the 4-0 success over Bristol Rovers, and the Manchester United loanee looks to be finding his feet at Wigan. Maloney clearly trusts him to lead the line ahead of the other options and I believe he will start again here.

Given Stevenage’s defence weakness and the fact that I expect Wigan to have the better of this game, I think it makes perfect sense to back Hugill to find the net again. At odds of 11/5, picking him to score anytime is my second selection.
