Wellington Phoenix vs Western Sydney Wanderers Prediction: Hosts to keep things tight again at Sky Stadium

It continues to be a miserable season for Wellington Phoenix, whose 1-1 draw at Sydney FC before the international break earned them a creditable point and stopped their rot extending to a fifth straight defeat, but they are seven without a win heading into Saturday's Australia A-League Men's game against Western Sydney Wanderers at Sky Stadium (04:00, TNT Sports 3).
The finals are now surely beyond last season's runners-up, something that can't be said for the Wanderers, who have won five of their last six matches and are now just four points behind second-place Western United with a game in hand. Below are my Wellington Phoenix vs Western Sydney Wanderers predictions, complete with all the latest team news and match odds.
Wellington Phoenix vs WS Wanderers Betting Tips

Team News
Alby Kelly-Heald will miss the remainder of the 2024/25 ALM season after dislocating his shoulder at training earlier this month. The 20-year-old goalkeeper had worked his way into being Giancarlo Italiano's number one, starting eight straight games, but missed the draw in Sydney last time out and won't feature again until the second half of the calendar year.
Off-season signing Joshua Oluwayemi, who began Wellington's first 13 matches and was thrust back into action against the Sky Blues, looks set to complete the campaign between the sticks.
Stefan Colakovski (knee), Scott Wootton, Paulo Retre and Isaac Hughes will also miss out this weekend due to injury, while captain Alex Rufer is suspended after receiving his fifth yellow card of the season in Sydney.
Youngsters Xuan Loke, Jayden Smith, Daniel Makowem and Lachlan Candy have all been included in Italiano's extended squad for Saturday.
Wellington Phoenix vs Western Sydney Wanderers Stats
- Wellington have avoided defeat in three of last four home games
- All nine matches at Sky Stadium in 24/25 have gone under 3.5 goals
- WSW's last H2H away win was in December 2021
Dylan Scicluna scored a screamer for Western Sydney Wanderers in their 4-1 thrashing of the Nix on December 22 but played just once more before succumbing to a knee injury that has curtailed his campaign. The 20-year-old Malta U21 international misses out for a 12th consecutive game this weekend, while it will be number 16 for South Korean defender Jeong Tae-wook (ankle).
James Temelkovski and Josh Laws have been added to Alen Stajcic's extended list, which includes Juan Mata, who hasn't started since a 1-0 defeat to Auckland on January 26.
Wellington Phoenix vs Western Sydney Wanderers Odds
Wellington have won twice without conceding since the Wanderers last tasted success at Sky Stadium in December 2021 (0-2), yet their current predicament, and the terrific form of Stajcic's side, has the hosts as 13/5 underdogs on Saturday. Those odds imply a win probability of 27.8%, while the visitors are 5/6, or a 54.5% chance, to record a fifth consecutive victory.
The Nix have drawn three of their last four home games, and a fourth in five can be backed at 13/5, while both teams to score, which has landed in WSW's last two matches, is priced at 8/15.
Wellington's main man Kosta Barbarouses, who bagged in both of New Zealand's World Cup 2026 qualifiers this month to help send the Oceania nation to the finals in the USA, Canada and Mexico, heads the anytime goalscorer market alongside the Wanderers' nine-goal leading marksman Nicolas Milanovic (both 6/4).
Double Chance & Over/Under +3.5 Goals - Wellington Phoenix or Draw & Under 3.5 @ 9/5
Most signs point towards an away win at Sky Stadium, with the in-form Wanderers eyeing up a top-two finish and the Nix all but assured of missing out on the finals.
However, there are reasons to believe that Saturday's hosts can, at the very least, avoid defeat.
Italiano's side have been poor this season but have taken something from five of their nine matches in Wellington and before a 0-1 defeat to Melbourne City last time out at Sky Stadium, had drawn three in a row on home soil.
They've lost four times in the New Zealand capital this term, but three of those have been by a one-goal margin, and the other, a 0-2 loss to rivals Auckland, saw both goals scored after the 88th minute.
Goals have been hard to come by at Sky Stadium for both the Nix and their opponents, with a total of 16 scored at the venue in 2024/25. There have been just three strikes across the last four contests played there, and every one of the nine matches this season have gone under 3.5 goals.
The Wanderers, meanwhile, have been terrific travellers in recent months, winning five of their last seven games away from CommBank Stadium, drawing the other two.
However, the March international break may have disrupted their momentum, and they may take a little bit of time to get back going again.
Wellington can be a stubborn outfit, even at the worst of times, and 9/5 for the New Zealanders to avoid defeat in a low-scoring encounter is too good an opportunity to pass up, irrespective of their troubles this term.

First Half Total Goals 2-Way - Under 0.5 @ 5/2
I've already spoken about how Sky Stadium has been starved of strikes this season, and that's been even more observable in first halves. Just five goals have been scored before the interval in Wellington - none in the last four matches there - and the most recent one, for Adelaide United on January 11, was a Matt Sheridan own goal.
While Italiano can be criticised for a lack of fluency in midfield and attack, he certainly knows how to keep things tight at the back at home, particularly in the first half.
He'll be looking to frustrate the opposition early on again this weekend, and as previously alluded to, the Wanderers may take a while to get back up to speed following the March international break.
Under 0.5 first-half goals looks a steal to me at 5/2.
