Union Berlin head into their final fixture of 2023 on Wednesday evening (KO, 17:30) in pretty dire straits, after Bochum inflicted a 10th defeat of the Bundesliga campaign on them on Saturday - two more than they suffered in the entirety of last season.

The capital city club should at least take heart from the fact that their next opponents, FC Koln, are one of only three clubs below them in the table, though a marginally superior goal difference is the only thing separating the sides at present.

Union Berlin vs Koln Betting Tips:

  • Union Berlin to win to nil @ 11/5

Team News

There are question marks over the availability of wing-back Robin Gosens heading into this one, after the Germany international missed Union's 3-0 defeat on the weekend.

Dutch defender Danilho Doekhi is still injured so Robin Knoche and Diogo Leite are likely to continue as the centre-back pairing, unless head coach Nenad Bjelica opts to hand a start to Italian veteran Leonardo Bonucci, who hasn't played since November 12.

For the visitors, Jeff Chabot is suspended after receiving a red card in Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Freiburg, which could hand an opportunity to Luca Kilian in defence.

Armenian forward Sargis Adamyan and Bosnian defender Leart Paqarada also miss out through injuries.

Match Odds

Union are 19/20 to win for a second time under Bjelica, whose first game was the 1-1 draw with Braga on November 29. A draw on Wednesday, meanwhile, is priced at 12/5, with a victory for the visitors at 3/1.

Both teams to score is 4/5 and it's 10/11 for over 2.5 goals.

Union Berlin to win and under 3.5 goals @ 6/4

Saturday was an eye-opener for Bjelica but Union have been improved under the Croatian's stewardship, with a draw and narrow defeat (to Real Madrid) in the Champions League sandwiching a 3-1 win over Borussia Monchengladbach.

Back-to-back wins at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei would be huge for their survival bid, and it's certainly a realistic prospect with their next opponents taking just five points from their eight games on the road in the Bundesliga.

Union's shocking home run looks to be over after picking up four points from their last two games there, and there shouldn't be too many goals on Wednesday with the visitors having only scored four times away from home.

Unsurprisingly, four goals marks Koln as the lowest scorers away from home in the Bundesliga, and they have failed to score in half (4/8) of their matches.

Union are yet to keep a clean sheet this season, but Wednesday acts as an opportune moment to get their first against a side who they have shut out in the last three meetings, two of which they won.
