Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea Stats: Corners, cards and goals

Tottenham Hotspur’s yo-yo form continued on Thursday night as they lost 1-0 at Bournemouth, a result that saw Ange Postecoglou draw the ire of the away end at full-time. He is now under serious pressure, as Spurs dropped to 10th in the Premier League table just days before they take on rivals Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (16:30, Sky Sports Main Event).
The Blues meanwhile enjoyed a thumping 5-1 win away at struggling Southampton in midweek, a result that carried them up to second place in the league. Enzo Maresca may not want to admit it, but title talk has to include his Chelsea side. Below you can find the Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea Stats as we delve into the facts and figures.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea Stats
- Tottenham's matches have featured the most corners in the Premier League
- Cole Palmer has scored nine goals and had 21 shots on target
Form Guide
Tottenham are currently 13th in the Premier League form table over the past six matches having won two, drawn one and lost three. That run has included a massive 4-0 win at Manchester City, but they’ve also lost to Ipswich Town at home and Bournemouth away. It’s that inconsistency that is riling up the Spurs fans right now.
They are now three games without a win having drawn to both Roma and Fulham prior to their trip to the South Coast. Meanwhile, Chelsea sit top of the form table and are unbeaten in their last six matches, having won four and drawn two of their recent outings. They’ve only lost two league games this season, one at Anfield and the other to Manchester City, which shows the level they are performing at this term.
Head-to-head
Chelsea have the better of this head-to-head record having won 79 of the historical meetings between the two sides. Spurs have 56 wins to their name while there have also been 42 draws over the past 115 years.
The first meeting between these two came in 1909, as Chelsea secured a 2-1 win, while recent history has also been dominated by the Blues. They won both games last season, 2-0 and 1-4 respectively, with that wild away match seeing Spurs go down to nine men but still hold their defensive line on the halfway line.
Tottenham have won just one of the last 10 meetings between the side, while these two have also played out some memorable fixtures. The Battle of the Bridge saw Chelsea come from 2-0 down to rescue a draw at home, a result that secured the title for Leicester City in 2016, while Tottenham’s last trophy came in 2008 as they beat Chelsea 2-1 in the League Cup final.

Goals & Shots
Chelsea overtook Tottenham as the top goalscorers in the league in midweek as they scored five and Spurs failed to find the net. Chelsea have now scored 31 goals in 14 games, while Tottenham have found the net on 28 occasions.
In terms of xG, Spurs are still performing really well, having created the second-highest amount of xG in the division. Only Manchester City have posted a higher xG per 90 than the 1.78 Spurs have managed, while Chelsea are also a creative outfit, with an xG per 90 of 1.63 the fourth-highest in the Premier League.
Cole Palmer is Chelsea’s top scorer so far this season with nine goals, Nicolas Jackson has eight and Noni Madueke has five as the front three continues to cause problems for the opposition. For Spurs, Brennan Johnson has six goals and leads the way from Dominic Solanke (five), and James Maddison (four).
As you can see from the graphic below, Palmer unsurprisingly leads the way for total shots and shots on target, while Madueke is also pretty prolific for shots on goal. Chelsea have three players who have had 20 shots on target this season, while no Tottenham player has managed more than 15.

Cards & Fouls
Wesley Fofana is currently out injured, but he and Marc Cucurella lead the way in terms of cards with six apiece. Yves Bissouma, Pedro Neto and Jackson are all at risk of suspension as they have picked up four yellow cards each, while neither side has had a red card to date.
Moises Caicedo has made the most fouls with 28, which puts him some way clear of the next highest, as Fofana and Dejan Kulusevski have both only committed 19. Levi Colwill has made 18 fouls, while Solanke has made 17 and given the history between these two outfits, we could see quite a feisty encounter on Sunday.
Chelsea currently sit second-bottom in the Fair Play table, with only Southampton picking up more cards than they have this season. Meanwhile, Spurs have been pretty clean, and sit third in the Fair Play table with 30 yellows in comparison to Chelsea’s 47.

Corners
Tottenham’s matches average the most corners in the Premier League this season (13.1), as they are on average having eight corners per match, and conceding 5.1. That puts them well clear of Newcastle United in second (11.6), while Chelsea are at the other end of the table for this particular statistic. Only Manchester United’s games have had fewer corners than the 8.9 they have averaged (5.5 for, 3.4 against).
