Sunderland vs Sheff Wed Prediction: Owls can rock and Rohl all night

Both Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday will be delighted with their starts to the new Championship season, ahead of their fixture at the Stadium of Light on Sunday. Sunderland secured a 2-0 win at Cardiff under new boss Regis Le Bris while Wednesday hammered Plymouth Argyle 4-0 at Hillsbrough.
The game is live on Sky Sports Main Event and kick-off at 12:00, so there will be a whole host of viewers tuning in to see these giants collide and below you can find my Sunderland vs Sheff Wed prediction.
Team News
Sunderland rotated heavily for their Carabao Cup defeat to Preston in midweek, so we can expect Le Bris to revert back to the line-up that did so well in Cardiff. Jack Clarke will start on the left, with Jobe Bellingham and Patrick Roberts likely to support young striker Eliezer Mayenda. Chris Rigg may have to settle for a place on the bench.
Ben Hamer is back in training with Sheffield Wednesday so may return to the bench while everyone else in Danny Rohl’s squad, other than Nathaniel Chalobah, is fit. Given the outstanding nature of their performance against Plymouth, I would expect an unchanged league XI from the Owls, with Svante Ingelsson set to continue in midfield alongside Barry Bannan after an impressive debut.
Sunderland are priced at 6/5 to win this game, with Wednesday available at 23/10. A draw can be backed at 12/5, BTTS is 8/11 and over 2.5 goals is 10/11.
BTTS @ 8/11
I’ve been impressed with both teams going forward so far. Obviously we are only analysing a small sample size, and I still feel Sunderland are lacking an elite number nine, but they have a whole load of quality in that final third. Clarke is the best in the division for me, and got off to a goalscoring start last weekend, while Bellingham and Roberts can also contribute goals.
The home side should find the net, against a Wednesday defence that wasn’t really tested against Plymouth. Meanwhile, the Owls purred against the Pilgrims, scoring four times and absolutely dominating from start to finish. With Jamal Lowe and Josh Windass both scoring, I think they will also enjoy a profitable afternoon in front of goal.
Sheff Wed to win and BTTS @ 5/1
Danny Rohl is quickly establishing himself as one of, if not the best manager in the Championship. He rescued Wednesday from a seemingly impossible position last season and after a positive summer, now has a squad that could feasibly challenge the top-six this term.
Now I’m expecting goals, as I’ve already explained given the attacking quality on show, but I also think the value could lie in backing Wednesday to come away with the points. They went to Hull and won in midweek, while the Stadium of Light can be a difficult place for Sunderland players to perform if they concede an early goal. All in all, I’m happy to back Rohl most weeks, and think we are getting good value on an exciting away success.
