Stockport vs Blackburn Prediction: Tight test expected at Edgeley Park

The Carabao Cup swings into action on Tuesday night, and we are turning our focus to Edgeley Park, where League 1 side Stockport County face Blackburn Rovers. After a title-winning season last term, there’s high hopes that the Hatters will be able to continue their incredible rise, and challenge in the top 10 of the third tier. 

A cup shock would give them the extra confidence, after they began their League 1 campaign with a 2-0 success over Cambridge United. Below you can find my Stockport vs Blackburn prediction. 

Team News

Lewis Bate picked up a slight knock against Cambridge at the weekend so I’d expect him to be rested for this one. Jayden Fevrier, Sam Hughes and Tyler Onyango could be part of a much-changed side for Dave Challinor, as County are likely to focus on the league this term. 

Meanwhile, Blackburn impressed at the weekend with a 4-2 win over Derby County, but the future of star forward Sammie Szmodics is still up in the air. He came on and scoreed against Derby, and could play from the start here, while Andreas Weimann is also expected to start having made his goalscoring debut from the bench on Friday night. Yuki Ohashi and Danny Batth are also expected to come into the team as John Eustace shuffles his pack.

Stockport are priced at 13/5 to win this game, with Blackburn available at 10/11. A draw can be blacked at 13/5, over 2.5 goals is 8/13 and BTTS is 4/7.

These are two decent attacking sides, it appears. We all know how strong Stockport have been in an attacking sense in recent years. They scored a ridiculous 96 goals last season in League 2, as they cantered to the title, and they scored twice at home to Cambridge in their first League 1 showing.

With Louie Barry back and scoring goals, and Will Collar and Kyle Wooton also doing well, Stockport are able to find the net at will. Meanwhile, Blackburn still have Szmodics on their books, and smashed Derby with a fine attacking performance last time out. I’m fairly sure this game should feature goals at both ends. 

Draw after 90 mins @ 13/5

There may be a division between them (for now), but I’m finding it tough to separate these two teams. Stockport create a din at Edgeley Park, and are a tough side to beat. They won 27 games last term and are likely to be contenders for promotion again under the talented Challinor. 

But Eustace also knows how to set a side up to be competitive, and with the changes that both teams are going to make, I think we could see a really even encounter. I think the value lies in backing a draw after 90 mins between these two teams, which would mean we head straight to penalties.
