St Mirren vs Rangers Prediction: Saints to pile pressure on a bruised Gers

Russel Martin takes his underfire Rangers side on the short trip from Glasgow to Paisley for Sunday’s showdown with St Mirren, live on Sky Sports Football from 12:00. The visitors arrive battered and bruised from a midweek mauling at the hands of Club Brugges in a Champions League qualifier. Fans are angry, but can the team get back on track and deliver a first win of the season?
Betfred’s Frank Monkhouse offers his thoughts as he takes us through his St Mirren vs Rangers Predictions in his match preview here on Betfred Insights...

St Mirren enjoy home advantage for the visit of Rangers from noon on Sunday. Stephen Robinson’s team enter on the back of a stunning cup upset over Hearts at this venue. They aim to build on that by collecting their first three points of the new Premiership campaign.
Having pushed Celtic hard on the opening day of the campaign, the Buddies enter without fear. A home win would drive them up the pecking order and above their guests.
Rangers were knocked from pillar to post by Brugge on Tuesday at Ibrox in a painful Champions League playoff. Most fans expected their team to drop out of the running, fearing the worst for Martin’s hastily assembled team if they made it through to the league phase.
Rangers look miles away from a team that’s ready to rub shoulders with Europe’s elite. Those camped in the away dressing room must dust themselves down and regroup ahead of a huge seven days.
The pre-match betting makes for interesting reading. St Mirren start as the underdogs in the match-winner market, but they enjoy home advantage, won last time out, and face an opponent that’s low on confidence.
Can St Mirren finally get off the mark? You can back the locals at odds of 10/3 and that’s sure to be popular on Sunday afternoon. A home win would send the travelling support into meltdown, and the stats suggest it’s possible.
Rangers have played two winnable league matches, but failed to register three points. They took the lead at Fir Park on matchday one, before Motherwell equalised and finished as the stronger team. Dundee then took the lead at Ibrox in the second game, with Gers needing a late fightback to rescue a point.
The visitors have two points on the board following a nightmare start, but it could’ve easily been worse. You can back Rangers at 8/11 or sit on the fence and play the draw at 3/1.
Both teams to score
Our first bet in Paisley is one that’s fast becoming a trend in games involving Rangers: both teams to score. Martin’s Gers are attractive in attack, playing out from the back, shifting the ball quickly through midfield, and creating opportunities for the likes of Cyriel Dessers and Danilo. But the club is plagued by woeful defending, and that has been the case for many years. Last season, Rangers conceded 41 goals, which was just six fewer than Hearts, who ended down in seventh.
Playing both teams to score would’ve secured you a return in midweek when Rangers lost 3-1 to Club Brugge, as well as in their previous four starts. Gers have scored in each of their six games played in August, conceding in all but one of those matches.
The same bet was the correct approach in four of their previous five meetings with St Mirren. Need more convincing? Both teams scored in Rangers’ last three visits to Paisley.

Double Chance (St Mirren Win/Draw)
Considering the recent form of both teams and Rangers’ energy-sapping loss on Tuesday, I considered backing the hosts to bank three points. Instead, I’ll take the safety net offered by the double chance market, placing our stake on St Mirren to win or draw the match.
With this approach, you’ll secure a profit on any result other than an away win. The odds are worthwhile, meaning you can play as a single or add to small multiples.
In addition to Rangers suffering that heavy defeat last time, the head-to-head stats favour Robinson’s boys. St Mirren battled to a 2-2 draw when last hosting Rangers, twice fighting back to level the scores. They also won 2-1 here on Boxing Day, netting the decisive goal with 90 minutes on the clock.
That means Rangers haven’t won at this venue since April 2024, when they ground out a 2-1, helped by an own goal from James Bolton. Back St Mirren to win or draw at an eye-catching offer.
