The Sportsman Untitled: Selles sacked and Wilder is back
This week on The Sportsman Untitled, Simon Lillibury (that’s me) is joined by EFL experts Gab Sutton and Justin Peach, to discuss the latest goings on in the greatest league in the world, the Championship.
We’ve had our first sacking of the campaign as Sheffield United decided enough was enough after five league defeats on the spin, and got rid of Ruben Selles. Chris Wilder could be about to return to the club for his third spell, so that leads the billing for the trio to discuss.
Championship Outright Odds

The Championship Outright Winners market has seen a small change, with Ipswich's 5-0 thumping of Sheffield United giving punters faith that the pre-season favourites will now kick on. Coventry City's odds have shortened again after a dominant but frustrating 1-1 draw with Norwich City, while Birmingham City are the big losers have gone out to 9/1.
We’ve got a video from Oli Mann, from the Sheff United Way to analyse, after he suggested Selles had to go before the 5-0 defeat to Ipswich Town. He has been proven right, but now the Blades must try and regroup ahead of their next fixture.
Elsewhere, there’s also been reports that the Championship play-offs could be expanded to include six teams rather than four. That would mean teams that finished seventh and eighth would be handed a shot at promotion in the tense play-offs.
As well as those proposals, the trio also discuss some key results from the recent weekend of action. The South Coast Derby ended all square at 0-0, Middlesbrough left it late to draw 2-2 at Preston North End, while Blackburn Rovers got an impressive victory away at Watford.
Then, with Justin on the show, we have a chat about his Derby County side and how they have got on so far under John Eustace. The Rams beat West Brom 1-0 this weekend, but have been surprisingly leaky at the back before then - so can they push on up the table?
We’ve also got three major fixtures to discuss this weekend, as the Baggies travel to Boro for Friday Night Football (20:00, Sky Sports Main Event), while Norwich City host a leaky Wrexham outfit on Saturday (15:00), before Monday pits Alex Neil’s Millwall against a Watford side (20:00, Sky Sports Main Event) that have slightly lost their way.
Gab and Justin give their score predictions for all three games, while on the Sportsman Untitled Extra on Friday - Leicester City vs Coventry City takes the focus for our big game preview. The M69 derby tends to produce entertainment, and that’s the main game on Sky this Saturday lunchtime.
As always, thanks for supporting the show - and make sure you like and subscribe to the channel for weekly EFL Championship content.
