Sporting
Sporting are still active on three fronts, having a relatively nice draw on the Champions League front, given they’re playing Bodo Glimt (a tough team, but it could have been far worse), are currently second in the league, and now have this first leg in the semi-finals of the Cup to contend with.
Their opponents here, Porto, are the ones just above them in the league.
They’ve been extremely good all season – hence still being involved in three competitions –and have won their last three in the league 1-0, 3-0 and 3-0; note that’s three clean sheets there.
The match before that was the 1-1 between them and Porto where they were pretty fortunateto be awarded a penalty deep into second-half injury time, which they scored.
Of course, you’re going to win plenty of games if you have a man with 26 goals to his name this season in your team. Colombian Luis Suarez has been on fire all season and you wonder whether if he carries on scoring at this rate, they’ll be keeping him in the summer, or cashing in on him when his transfer value is at its peak.
But that’s to worry about another day.
They should field a strong side here, including starting Suarez but Fotis Ioannidis is unlikely to be in the XI as he’s not fully fit yet.
Porto
Porto have somewhat been running out of gas of late.
Yes, they’ve carried on winning since that 1-1 but only just. It was 1-0 away at Nacional, 1-0 at home to Rio Ave and then 3-1 at home to Arouca.
They’re badly missing the injured Samu, whose goals and physicality have been the cornerstone of their campaign this season. He was injured in that 1-1 draw.
On the plus side, former Southampton stalwart Jan Bednarek has been excellent, as has Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Bednarek even scored the winner, the only goal of the match, in that game away at Nacional.
Sporting vs Porto Predicted Lineups
- Sporting: Silva; Fresneda, Diomande, Inacio, Araujo; Hjulmand, Morita; Catamo, Trincao, Goncalves; Suarez
- Porto: D Costa; A Costa, Kiwior, Bednarek, Sanusi; Rosario, Veiga, Froholdt; Pepe, Moffi, Pietuszewski
Match Odds 0.5pts Back Sporting to win and under 3.5 goals @ 8/5
Sporting are the better team at the moment, no doubt about that, with that absence of Samu not to be underestimated.
Still, 11/10 is slightly on the short side given that games between Portugal’s Big Three tend to be so tight. It’s 2/1 the draw and 12/5 on Porto.
A good alternative and at a better price is to go with Sporting to win and under 3.5 goals in the match.
As per above these do tend to be tight and often low-scoring affairs so that one makes sense at 8/5.

Half
These games also tend to be slow-burners rather than ‘all guns blazing from the start’, so I certainly wouldn’t put anyone off going with under 0.5 goals at half-time at a decent-looking 6/4.
Then again, a couple of early goals (whoever scores them) or Porto scoring one in the first half, never to be completely discounted, would seriously dampen the chances of the bet above. So best leave it alone and just go with the one selection for this match.
