Sporting Lisbon
The summer loss of goal machine Viktor Gyokeres was always an inevitability given Sporting's need to sell their most valuable players and the striker's desire to leave for bigger and better things.
Since his exit, Luis Suarez (no, not that one), a summer recruit from Spanish side Almeria has done his best to make up for the loss of their main man, while Conrad Harder, Gyokeres' understudy last year and a player who grabbed the Swede's Number 9 jersey has also been decent, though mostly off the bench.
There was disappointment in losing the Portuguese Super cup to rivals Benfica, but they've made up for it since, with three straight wins in the league, scoring 10 and conceding just one.
Skipper and midfield kingpin Morten Hjulmand was rumoured to be leaving but Sporting won't budge on their asking price, so he looks set to stay which is sensible, given his all-round importance to the side.
Porto
Francesco Fariolo is Porto's new manager after Martin Anselmi failed to impress in his short stint at the club, their poor performances and results in the FIFA Club World Championships the final straw.
Fariolo is just 36 and understandably given his age, has limited experience at the top level, a one-year spell at Ajax last season his biggest gig so far, where he let a nine-point lead with just five games to go slip, with PSV clinching the title on the last day of the season. He left shortly after.
Fariolo's record at Porto is pretty much perfect with three league matches resulting in three wins, nine goals scored and none conceded. It goes without saying this is his biggest test so far.
Young striker Samu Aghehowa, who scored 27 goals last season and was a transfer target for Newcastle United has a muscle injury that will put him out for a while, his replacement for this one likely to be veteran Dutch striker Luuk de Jong, formerly of…Newcastle United.
Sporting Lisbon vs Porto Predicted Lineups
- Sporting Lisbon: Silva, Debast, Fresneda, Inacio, Mangas, Morita, Hjulmand, Catamo, Pote, Trincao, Suarez
- Porto: Costa, Bednarek, Sanusi, Perez, Costa, Froholt, Veiga, Varela, Gomes, Sainz, De Jong
Match Odds:
Sporting are 11/10, implied probability 47.6%, which is pretty much what I expected them to be. Porto are 12/5 (29.4%) with the draw 5/2.
Sporting won this fixture in Lisbon the last two times by 2-0, the year before that it was 2-2, prior to that it was a 2-1 win for Porto and going even further back, a 1-1 draw in 2021.
So somewhat mixed results but Sporting have at the very least tended to avoid defeat in this fixture over the years when at home.

Correct Score
This really isn't a market I play often but there are good reasons for keeping two scorelines on your side. But first up, it's worth pointing out that in six league matches between them this season, they've conceded just one goal. That this could be a low-scoring game is further backed up by the fact that in two league matches and a Cup one last season between them, all stayed under 2.5 goals. 'Unders' is an even money chance, but I think we can do better than that.
Sporting look in good shape and should avoid defeat on home territory again but Porto have started well and look surprisingly organised at the back given they're under a new manager who normally takes time to settle. Splitting stakes between 1-0 at 7/1 and 1-1 at 6/1 looks a sensible plan.

Anytime Goalscorers
That man de Jong is yet to score and may take a while to find his feet, so we'll swerve the 2/1 he scores anytime here.
The value in this market is arguably Sporting's Francisco Trincao, who had a somewhat quiet season last year, somewhat hampered by injuries, but who has three in three games so far this campaign. 23/10 that he scores one here is worthy of a small interest, also given he's a big-name player, who enjoys the biggest games.
