Rangers ibrox stadium

New Rangers boss Danny Rohl makes his Ibrox debut before an expectant audience. Will the former Bayern Munich coach get off to a flying start? This one isn't available on UK TV but kicks-off at 15:00 on Sunday afternoon.

Betfred’s Scottish football writer Frank Monkhouse previews the clash but stays away from the Match Result market. He has however picked out his two Best Bets as we delve into his Rangers vs Kilmarnock Predictions...

Match Preview:

Rangers ended an exhausting and embarrassing search for Russell Martin’s successor when appointing Danny Rohl as their new head coach.

The former Bayern Munich and Germany national team assistant was thrown into the deep end when losing to Brann on Thursday in the Europa League. Could we see a new-manager bounce in the Gers’ play?

Kilmarnock travel to Ibrox one place above their hosts, with a point more on the board. The team from Ayrshire scored back-to-back 2-0 wins over Dundee United and St Mirren, but proved no match for the table-topping Hearts last time out.

The Jambos left Rugby Park with a stunning 3-0 victory, putting pressure on manager Stuart Kettlewell to respond quickly.

Rangers vs Kilmarnock Predicted Lineups

  • Rangers: Butland, Tavernier, Souttar, Djiga, Meghoma, Rothwell, Raskin, Antman, Aashhard, Gassama, Chermiti
  • Kilmarnock: Beach, Brown, Stanger, Mayo, Deas, Thompson, Watson, Polworth, Kiltie, Anderson, Dackers

Match Odds:

The disastrous and short Martin era is finally over in Glasgow. The former Southampton boss failed to win a Premiership match at home during his time in charge of the Gers.

His replacement, 36-year-old German Rohl, is tasked with leading his toiling team up the charts. Despite one win from the eight previous rounds, Betfred has Rangers as 1/3 favourites.

Kilmarnock know their opponents are a wounded animal, and must be feared. But the visitors also appreciate that there’s never been a better time to face the Gers in Glasgow.

Confidence is low in the home dressing room; the coaching staff barely have their jackets off, and the fans are angry. Back the away win at 17/2 or try your luck on another draw at 9/2.

Rangers vs Kilmarnock Stats

  • Rangers have only won once in the SPL but this is Danny Rohl's first league match in charge.
  • Kilmarnock sit ahead of their opponents in the table by one point and one place.
  • Backing Over 2.5 goes against the stats - Rangers are at 25% for the season with Killie at 62%.
  • The hosts however sit on top of the BTTS table in the SPL - at 75%. Kilmarnock are at 50%.

Over 2.5 Goals

Our first bet on Sunday afternoon in Govan is over 2.5 goals. That’s a market I would exploit when betting on Rangers games until they show us better. The blue backline is a shambles at times and lost another three avoidable goals on Thursday in Norway.

The home team have league stats of eight goals scored and nine conceded. That tells the story.

Looking at Killie’s most recent visits to Ibrox, they lost 6-0 here back in December and suffered a 4-1 defeat the time before that. They conceded three against Hearts, two in the cup versus St Mirren, and another couple when Celtic won in Ayrshire.

The Rangers attack is low on confidence ahead of this match, but a leaky Killie defence could change that.

Gassama to score anytime

Djeidi Gassama has been one of the very few positives in an otherwise abysmal summer transfer window.

The young Frenchman has five European goals already this season. He wasn’t at his best in midweek, but the 22-year-old certainly wasn’t one of the worst that night.

The youngster worked with Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday, so understands his style of play.

Gassama last got on the scoresheet in a 2-1 defeat to Sturm Graz, but I’m picking him to get amongst the goals on Saturday. He’ll be asked to use his pace and trickery to get Gers into advanced areas and the fans out of their seats.

There is no doubt that he'll be an important player in Rohl’s Ibrox bow and he has the quality to deliver the goods. Back him to score anytime.
