The Saints were there last term and the Red Dragons are on a run of three consecutive promotions. You can imagine there will be a lot of eyes on this contest on the South Coast. Read on for my Southampton vs Wrexham predictions, aided by the latest team news and match odds.

Team News

Will Still is set for his first taste of English football as a manager after building up his reputation in France. He has a big job on his hands in Southampton, who are aiming for an immediate return to the Premier League.

He is one of the most exciting young coaches in Europe and it will be interesting to see how he fares in the Championship this year. He has made two signings to what is already a strong squad for this level, with Damion Downs and Joshua Quarshie joining from Bundesliga clubs Koln and Hoffenheim respectively.

Football Odds

The Saints have laid out a decent fee for the former, who will add to their already impressive forward line that features Adam Armstrong and Cameron Archer. Armstrong scored 21 league goals the last time Southampton were in this division.

He was deemed surplus to requirements in the top flight and spent the second half of last season on loan at West Bromwich Albion. I reckon he will be a key figure this time around, though.

Southampton vs Wrexham Stats

  • Southampton won 65% (15/23) of their home games in the Championship in 2023/24
  • Adam Armstrong scored 21 goals in the league that year

Wrexham are riding a wave of momentum which has carried them from the National League to the Championship in three years. Boss Phil Parkinson has overseen an excellent job in North Wales but this will be his biggest test in charge of the Red Dragons.

He has struggled at this level in the past and many have been critical of his style of football, and whether it will be sustainable to deliver Premier League football at Wrexham.

The Welsh outfit have been busy in the transfer market, with eight new faces arriving over the summer and there are sure to be more to come. The notable incomings are Lewis O'Brien (Nottingham Forest) and Kieffer Moore (Sheffield United), while they are trying to land Ipswich Town's Nathan Broadhead for a club-record fee of around £7.5m.

O'Brien and Moore are likely to be handed their competitive debuts at St. Mary's on Saturday and both have strengthened Wrexham's midfield and forward areas respectively.

Southampton vs Wrexham Odds

Southampton are the 8/11 favourites to win this match. They won 15 of their 23 home games in the second tier two seasons ago, so they could be set to make St. Mary's a fortress once again.

Both teams to score struck in 65% (15/23) of the Saints' home games in that campaign, and combining this market with a victory produces a 13/5 price, which has an implied probability of 27.8%. BTTS on its own is valued at 10/11.

The draw is marketed at 11/4 if you think Wrexham can come away with a hard-fought point. The visitors are 4/1 to collect the three points, having won 47% (11/23) of their away matches in League 1 in 2024/25.

Southampton and over 1.5 goals @ 23/20

Southampton are coming down with a very strong squad for this level. Regardless of the unknown aspect of Still at this level, he has more than enough resources available to him to deliver a successful season.

Young talent Tyler Dibling's future remains uncertain but there are still so many quality players in the Saints' ranks, such as Armstrong, Archer, Will Smallbone and Mateus Fernandes to name a few.

Still has one of the best squads in the league and this should play a huge role for them in the promotion race. Wrexham will not have faced an opponent of this quality in their journey thus far, so this could very much be a baptism of fire for Parkinson's men.

It's early days for Still, so their momentum from the last few years under Parkinson could give them an advantage, but I'm expecting the hosts' individual quality to shine through. I'm going for a Southampton win and for there to be at least two goals in the contest.

Adam Armstrong anytime goalscorer @ 7/4

It felt like Armstrong's Southampton chapter was closing last season but relegation has changed things as he is a very prudent player at this level. As I mentioned above, in the last full campaign he had in this division with the Saints he bagged 21 goals, while also contributing 13 assists.

He will be a key asset for Still this season and someone he can rely upon to convert chances. Armstrong's record in the Championship makes for impressive reading, with 80 goals in 248 appearances. He is the kind of player you need in a promotion race, and he could be set for another fruitful year in the second tier with the Saints.

I have him starting as he means to go on with a goal against Wrexham on Saturday.
