Will Southampton’s Championship reality check continue when they take on Millwall on Thursday, January 1 (15:00 GMT, Sky Sports+)? The Saints are without a win in their last four games as they welcome the surprise play-off contenders on the South Coast.

Alex Neil’s men sit fifth in the table as 2026 dawns. Millwall are chasing their first second-tier play-off participation since the 2001/02 season, when they finished fourth. Read on for my Southampton vs Millwall predictions featuring the latest match odds and team news.

Team News

Southampton’s attack continues to be blunted by the lack of striker Ross Stewart. A hamstring injury has sidelined the Scotland international since October.

Defender Mads Roerslev has been out since November with a knee injury. Saints will also be without winger Samuel Edozie and the midfield presence of Shea Charles, both due to hamstring injuries.

Millwall have also fell foul of hamstring issues at this busy stage of the season. Loanee Will Smallbone, borrowed from the hosts, is missing with such an ailment. Goalkeeper Lukas Jensen picked up a quadriceps injury while playing for the under-21s, extending his absence.

The visitors will also be without Luke Cundle, Casper De Norre, Derek Mazou-Sacko and Josh Coburn. Manager Alex Neil will be forced to shuffle his deck here.

Southampton vs Millwall Predicted Lineups

  • Southampton: Bazunu; Harwood-Bellis, Wood, Stephens; Fellows, Jander, Downes, Manning; Azaz, Scienza; Armstrong
  • Millwall: Crocombe; Crama, Taylor, Cooper, Doughty; Sturge, Mitchell; Emakhu, Bangura-Williams, Langstaff; Ivanovic

Southampton vs Millwall Odds

Southampton are priced at 4/5 to secure a much-needed home victory. Millwall are 10/3, their recent form perhaps bringing them into question despite a lofty league placing. The stalemate is priced at 11/4.

Southampton vs Millwall Stats

  • Millwall have won their last two encounters with Southampton. If The Lions overcome The Saints again, it will be the first time they have secured three wins in a row against them since 1977.
  • Southampton currently sit 13th in the table. Were they to finish there it would be their worst league placing since their two-season stint in League One between 2009 and 2011.

Draw @ 11/4

Neither of these sides is firing on all cylinders. I feel their respective slumps could cancel each other out.

Southampton have found the Championship a sobering experience since relegation from the Premier League last term. Manager Will Still couldn’t cling on for long, being replaced in November by under-21s boss Tonda Eckert, initially on an interim basis. The German has been in permanent charge since December 5, but results haven’t stabilised just yet.

Millwall are overachieving in the league table, but a raft of injuries has blunted Neil’s Lions. The 2-1 win over Bristol City last time out was their first victory in five games. They will view this as winnable but I’m not sure there is enough in their ranks to turn over Southampton.

Adam Armstrong anytime goalscorer @ 23/20

The mercurial forward scores in bursts, and Double A is due one of those after four goalless games. Before this mini-drought, he bagged back-to-back braces against West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City.

Before that? Why he scored a goal against a certain Millwall FC at The Den. Armstrong might just fancy tormenting a familiar foe to kick off another of his hot spells this winter.
