Slovakia vs Ukraine

Slovakia pulled off a huge upset by beating Belgium 1-0 to get their Euro 2024 campaign off to a flying start, but they did ride their luck at times. They take on Ukraine in Dusseldorf on Friday (14:00, BBC One), with the Blue and Yellows looking to respond to their 3-0 drubbing against Romania.

The Falcons know that a win here will book their place in the last 16, but we are sure to expect a much-improved performance from Ukraine, which could set the stage for a fascinating contest. Read on for my Slovakia vs Ukraine prediction, featuring team news and match odds.

Slovakia vs Ukraine Betting Tips

  • Over 2.5 goals @ 11/10
  • Mykhailo Mudryk 3+ shots @ 7/5
  • Correct score - 2-2 @ 14/1

Slovakia vs Ukraine Odds

Slovakia are 11/4 to win this match, giving them an implied probability of 26.7%. Ukraine are valued at 11/10, which gives them a theoretical chance of 47.6%. The draw can be backed at 23/10 (30.3%).

Both teams to score is marketed at 5/6 and over 2.5 goals is on offer at 11/10.

Ukraine striker Artem Dovbyk had just one shot on goal against Romania but failed to hit the target. The La Liga top scorer will be hoping to revive his side's qualification hopes in Dusseldorf, and he priced at 7/4 to score anytime.

Team News

Slovakia boss Francesco Calzona will have been impressed by his side's resolute defending against the Red Devils, so I can't imagine he will be making too many changes to his starting XI for the Ukraine clash.

Denis Vavro was an injury doubt to feature last time out but he ended up starting the game. Experienced midfielder Ondrej Duda came off with cramp in the dying stages but there isn't any fear that he should be sidelined for this match.

Ukraine left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko missed the humiliating loss to Romania and he could be set to return in defence here, which would allow Oleksandr Zinchenko to move back into midfield and help his side dictate the tempo.

Goalkeeper Andriy Lunin is likely to keep his place in between the sticks despite his errors in Munich.

In attack, Roman Yaremchuk  and Ruslan Malinovskyi could come into the fray as Ukraine look to add more potency in front of goal.

Over 2.5 goals @ 11/10

Slovakia were fortunate to come away with a clean sheet against Belgium, with Romelu Lukaku having two goals ruled out, and I don't think they will be so lucky again. They took their chance which ended up to be the winner but they will need to show more of a goal threat if they are to secure their place in the knockout stage on Friday.

Ukraine's defence was so easy to bypass for Romania last time out, and shot-stopper Lunin didn't paint himself in a good light with some of his errors. Slovakia will have seen this and look to exploit it in Dusseldorf. The Falcons will also need to be wary of their own box, too.

Ukraine managed 13 shots against Romania, although just two on target, and you have to imagine that their shooting will not be so wayward this time around. They have players like Dovbyk and Mykhailo Mudryk who can score goals, and Slovakia cannot afford to underestimate them after their opening performance.

It is also worth noting that there have been three or more goals in five of Ukraine's last six matches, as well as in four of Slovakia's last six competitive outings.

Over 2.5 goals at 11/10 Mykhailo Mudryk 3+ shots @ 7/5

Mudryk remains an enigma to the footballing community, and he is a figure that certainly divides opinion. While you can criticise his end product, his dribbling and ability to get into strong positions cannot be questioned.

He managed four shots against Romania with only one hitting the target. His speed and trickery gives Ukraine an outlet and I am sure they will look to get him heavily involved against Slovakia.

I think the Falcons will find it hard to stop him getting into their final third, so I suspect we will see him let a few more shots fly here.

Mykhailo Mudryk to have 3+ shots at 7/5 Correct score - 2-2 @ 14/1

If I had to call this game, I'd go with a 2-2 draw. Ukraine can't be any worse than they were against Romania, and I am expecting a much better performance from them. As for Slovakia, I don't think the game plan that worked against Belgium will be successful again and I do think they will concede.

Then it will be a question of how they respond once they have been breached. They both have players who can provide a spark, but I can see them cancelling each other out. A draw would work well for Slovakia, but leaves Ukraine a mountain to climb against Belgium on matchday three.
