Sheffield United vs Sunderland Bet Builder Tips: 10/1 shot for tense final

So here we are, the Championship play-off final. Sheffield United face Sunderland in what is set to be a tense and nervy affair at Wembley, with this one kicking off at 15:01 on Saturday and the game shown on Sky Sports Main Event. That slightly different kick-off time is part of “Every Minute Matters” campaign, with the British Heart Foundation playing a key role in this weekend’s football.

Under 2.5 goals

The last four Championship play-off finals have all seen under 2.5 goals and with the ways these two have set up recently, I’m more than happy to back under 2.5 goals once again. Given how Sunderland played in their semi-final success over Coventry City, I think we will see another robust and defensive performance from Regis Le Bris. 

He isn’t going to change the way he set up from the start, and the Black Cats will look to frustrate the Blades, and hit them on the break. In a throwback, we could even see both teams line up with a 4-4-2 formation, as they did in the semi-finals. 

We are going to see plenty of direct football with the likes of Kieffer Moore and Wilson Isidor starting up top for their respective outfits. Both of these teams have decent defences, so I’m expecting a very tight encounter at Wembley on Saturday. 

Over 9.5 corners

With both sides having a lot of physicality, we can expect direct football and plenty of corners under the arch. I’m not expecting either side to be shy when approaching the box, and they’ve posted decent numbers all season in terms of corners. 

Sheffield United have seen an average of 10.54 corners over their matches this season while Sunderland are sitting at 9.74, making me comfortable with backing over 9.5 corners in the play-off final. It’s a good price boost for our Bet Builder. 

Gustavo Hamer and Luke O’Nien to get booked

As you can see, I’m steering away from predicting the result at Wembley on Saturday. In my gut, I think Sunderland will nick it by one goal, but I’m not sure whether that will come in normal time or extra time - so I’m going to stay away. There’s also a chance that Sheffield United end their years of hurt and finally get over the line, having proven themselves to be the third-best team in the division in 2024/25. 

I can’t call it, and won’t get dragged into predicting the result or a goalscorer for this Bet Builder, as there are too many variables for me to consider and this could be a 0-0 after 90 minutes. 

However, I think we’ve got two feisty characters on the pitch that I’m more than happy to back to get booked, especially if it is a tight game. Let’s start with Sunderand’s captain Luke O’Nien, who will be playing at centre-back alongside Dan Ballard and is the master of the dark arts. He’s picked up eight yellows in the league this season and will be doing everything he can to stop Moore and Tyrese Campbell. 

Meanwhile, Gustavo Hamer finished the season as the most-booked player in the league with 13 yellows to his name. His fiery temperament makes him such a good midfielder, but I cannot see him keeping a clean slate at Wembley. Two obvious yellows for me.
