Sheffield Wednesday remain deep in relegation trouble but they look capable of earning an important win over sixth-placed Hull at home to start 2024 off on a positive note.

The Owls are second-bottom in the Championship, still six points off safety, and it is likely to be a very testing winter for them as they try to work their way out of trouble.

However, at home lately they have shown signs of being up for the fight and they can get the better of Hull, who have only won one of their last five matches on the road.

Team News

The home side have several players out through suspension and injury. George Byers and Bambo Diaby are banned, while Callum Paterson, John Buckley, Mallik Wilks, Dominic Iorfa and Mohamed Diaby are among those still on the sidelines as they all recover from various ailments.

City will be able to call on both Jean Michael Seri and Adama Traore as the duo have both delayed meeting up with Mali and Ivory Coast respectively ahead of the upcoming African Cup of Nations.

The visitors will, though, be without injured quartet Ryan Allsop, Ruben Vinagre, Jaden Philogene and Dogukan Sinik.

Match Odds

A home win is 2/1, while the draw is also available at the same price.

An away win for the Tigers is on offer at 13/10, while both teams to score at Hillsborough on New Year's Day is a 4/5 chance.

Sheffield Wednesday to win @ 2/1

The Owls' league position remains perilous as only Rotherham are below them in the table.

However, there have been some good signs under boss Danny Rohl, who has won four of his 11 games in charge with three of them coming at Hillsborough.

Wednesday have won two of their last three at home, and were 1-0 up against Cardiff just before Christmas in their most recent Hillsborough clash before conceding twice in the final quarter of an hour to lose narrowly 2-1.

They will have identified this game as another potential occasion to pick up more valuable points in their fight for survival and a nervy Tigers outfit, who have struggled away from home of late, could be sent packing.

Sheffield Wednesday to win at 2/1

Anthony Musaba to score anytime - 18/5

Musaba is Wednesday's leading scorer in the league this season with just four goals which goes some way to explaining the Owls' struggles.

He netted the late winner earlier this month at home to QPR before following up with the opener against Cardiff in the next game.

Musaba has been among the more dynamic of Wednesday's attacking players in recent matches and has been fairly ruthless when getting a chance in front of goal of late, scoring twice from just four shots in total across his last four outings.

If anyone is going to inspire the hosts to a key win to start the new year off well then it could be Musaba.
