Scotland celebrate their promotion to the top-tier of the UEFA Nations League with a home game against Poland at Hampden Park.
Thursday’s game will be the Scots' first outing since a miserable showing at Euro 2024 when they finished rock bottom of Group A. One draw and two defeats with two goals scored and seven conceded made for an embarrassing summer in Germany. The Tartan Army demand much better from Steve Clarke’s team in this competition as they test themselves against a side 20 places above them in the FIFA rankings.
Poland arrive in Glasgow with problems of their own following a similarly dismal display at the Euros. The Eagles ended bottom of a star-studded Group D behind Austria, France, and the Netherlands. Michal Probierz’s team finished with two defeats and a draw, scoring three but conceding six. Thursday is a chance to make an overdue return to winning ways, but the visitors take heart from a hard-fought 1-1 draw with France in their last start.
With a competitive contest expected under the lights at the national stadium, Betfred’s pre-match betting odds make for interesting reading, and there’s value available.
Despite being outclassed in their three games on German soil, traders have a home win as favourite, and that’s sure to stir up some interest. The home win is currently available at 13/10 on the Betfred app, and that’s shorter than expected. Scotland must be at their best to get the fans back onside and ease some of the pressure mounting on Clarke’s shoulders.
Sharing a Nations League pool with Portugal and Croatia, Poland know Thursday’s trip represents a great chance to get off to a winning start and bag three vital points. They kick off as the underdogs with 2/1 currently available, and we expect that to be popular.
There’s certainly enough value there to back the away win as a single or to add to your midweek accumulators. Fancy these sides to cancel each other out on an important night for the locals? The draw is also 2/1, and that gets our vote.
Both teams to score
There’s a lot on the line here, with both teams knowing they underperformed and let their fans down badly in the summer. In an unpredictable competition, we place our trust in the trends and back both teams to score at a fair price. Scotland and Poland have players capable of finding the net, but question marks remain over the defence.
The head-to-head figures show backing both teams to score would’ve landed you a winner in each of the last three renewals of this fixture, a run spanning ten years.
In those three games, Scotland and Poland served up a total of ten goals and that’s enough to merit our stake. Both teams scored in Poland’s last outing when drawing 1-1 with Les Bleus, while the Scots netted against both Germany and Switzerland in June.
Match result - draw
We're sticking with the stats for our second bet from this game, and we aim for higher odds when backing a draw in the match result. Interestingly, each of the last three games involving these nations have produced a level finish, including a 1-1 at this venue two years ago. The visitors needed a 90th-minute penalty from Krzysztof Piatek to get level after Kieran Tierney had put his side ahead.
Need a little more convincing before parting with your hard-earned cash on a midweek Nations League fixture? These well-matched rivals have crossed paths 11 times previously, with six ending all-square. Five of the last six have been draws with Scotland’s last win in 2014 and Poland’s most recent success coming in 1980.
