Northern Ireland will travel to Bucharest for an international friendly against Romania on Friday, with kick-off at 19:45. Michael O’Neill’s men failed to qualify for Euro 2024 this summer, but they did beat Denmark 2-0 in their final qualification match. Meanwhile, Romania will be playing in Germany this summer having won their qualification group in style.

Below, we give our Romania vs Northern Ireland prediction, with team news and match odds included.

Romania vs Northern Ireland Tips

  • Romania to win to nil @ 21/10
  • Romania 2-0 Northern Ireland @ 8/1

Team News

George Puscas, with 11 goals in 40 games for his country has been called up to lead the line for Romania again, while Premier League duo Ionut Radu and Radu Dragusin may also feature. Tottenham’s centre-back will star as he looks to add to his 13 caps, and he’s become a key figure for Romania at just 22 years of age.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland’s squad includes youngsters Conor Bradley, Trai Hulme, Brodie Spencer, Callum Marshall and Isaac Price. The future could be bright if those players take to international football quickly, while Stevenage’s Jamie Reid could be handed his first cap at the age of 29.

Match Odds

Romania are EVS to win this match, with Northern Ireland priced at 12/5 for the win. A draw can be backed at 11/5, BTTS is 10/11 and over 2.5 goals is 6/5.

Romania to win to nil @ 21/10

In qualifying for Euro 2024, Romania have proven themselves to be a brilliant outfit of late. They didn’t lose a single game in the entirety of 2023 and have kept four clean sheets in their last five games. They may not be the most entertaining team, with a focus on defence, but they are efficient.

That strong defence, combined with Northern Ireland’s lack of form, makes me think this will be another comfortable home win for the home side. Edward Iordănescu has done a superb job since coming out of retirement to return to the dugout, and Northern Ireland simply are not on the same level as Romania at this moment in time. I’d happily back the win at EVS, but feel we can push the odds even further with a win to nil.

Romania 2-0 Northern Ireland @ 8/1

Given the home side only score more than two goals once last year, we can expect their first game of 2024 to follow the same pattern. They are likely to keep a clean sheet as we have already explained, with Northern Ireland failing to score in three of their last five games.

So I believe we can nail a correct score, with 1-0 and 2-0 the most likely options in my eyes. O’Neill’s side conceded four against Finland and Slovenia in recent games on the road so it is unlikely that they will keep their hosts down to just one goal. Therefore, the 8/1 on offer for this to finish 2-0 feels like the sensible pick.
