Barcelona face what's likely to be their toughest test of the season so far, when they travel to Madrid to take on Iñigo Pérez's Rayo Vallecano on Sunday night.
Following their promotion to the top flight under Andoni Iraola in 2021, Rayo became a real bogey side for the Catalans. Barça went five meetings without a victory overall, and were beaten 1-0 in Vallecas in the 2021/22 season, and 2-1 in the 2022/23 campaign.
Since then, the signs are that the tide might have turned, with each of the last three encounters going Barcelona's way. However, even in their free-scoring first year under the guidance of Hansi Flick, they found Rayo a tough nut to crack, registering 2-1 and 1-0 victories in the 2024/25 league meetings.
The German will be expecting another difficult match on Sunday, but his side have made a positive start to La Liga, winning their two opening fixtures. They were comfortable 3-0 winners against the nine men of Mallorca on matchday one, but had to come from two goals down to see off newly promoted Levante 3-2 in Valencia last weekend.
Flick started that match with Marcus Rashford on the left flank and Raphinha operating in a central role, behind striker Ferran Torres. It wasn't a huge success, and the defending champions switched to a more familiar approach after the interval, with a long-range screamer from Pedri the turning point in the game.
The likelihood is we'll see Raphinha start in his usual role on the left on Sunday, with Rashford expected to be used as an impact sub once more. There's greater uncertainty in midfield, with both Fermín López and Marc Casadó linked with moves away as the transfer window draws to a close.
Flick appears keen to keep both, and surprisingly started Casadó at Levante in an apparent rebuke to president Joan Laporta, who would welcome a big sale as the club continues to live on the edge of La Liga's strict financial limits. As it stands, they have not been able to register Wojciech Szczęsny, leaving Barça without a senior back-up to number one Joan García, given Marc-André ter Stegen is expected to miss around three more months with a back problem.
As for Rayo Vallecano, they are already four competitive games into their season. They started La Liga in impressive fashion, taking advantage of some calamitous defending and goalkeeping from Girona to race into a 3-0 lead at the break at Montilivi. They ultimately won that game 3-1, but were beaten 1-0 in Bilbao by Athletic Club in their second fixture.
The Madrid club have also commenced what is only their second ever European game. They are in the Conference League, after an impressive eighth-place finish last term. Play-off opposition came in the form of FC Neman Grodno of Belarus, and they had little trouble securing progress.
Perhaps surprisingly, given their long absence from the European stage, Pérez rotated heavily in both legs of the tie. Without a deep squad to call upon, Rayo struggled to exert their superiority in the opening hour of both legs. However, they ultimately won the tie 5-0, with four of their goals scored by substitutes.
Álvaro García grabbed three of those goals, with the pacey winger looking sharp in the opening fortnight of the season. Jorge de Frutos has also excelled, with two goals and an assist already this term. He's also a winger by trade, but looks set to be used as a striker, which has been a problem position for Rayo for a number of years.
Team News:
There's little risk of Rayo suffering a European hangover, with as many as nine changes expected from the side that was selected on Thursday night. Goalkeeper Augusto Batalla and centre-back Florian Lejeune were the only regulars who started that game. García, De Frutos and Isi Palazón should all return in the most advanced roles on Sunday.
Defenders Nobel Mendy and Abdul Mumin are the only injury absentees for Rayo. Recent addition Luiz Felipe should return to partner Lejeune in central defence.
The visitors are also doing pretty well on the fitness front at this early point in the season. Aside from the sidelined Ter Stegen, Gavi is the only senior player who will miss this game due to injury.
The fit-again Robert Lewandowski was used off the bench last weekend. He may need to bide his time before returning to the starting lineup though, given Ferran has started the season brightly with two goals in two games.
Rayo Vallecano vs Barcelona Predicted Lineups
Rayo Vallecano: Batalla, Ratiu, Lejeune, Felipe, Chavarria, Ciss, Lopez, Palazon, Diaz, A Garcia, De Frutos
Barcelona: Garcia, Kounde, Araujo, Cubarsi, Balde, Pedri, De Jong, Yamal, Olmo, Raphinha, Torres
Match Odds:
Barcelona are the 2/5 favourites to win this game and take a 100% record into the international break. If you see their recent problems in this fixture returning, you can back Rayo Vallecano to win at 13/2, while the Draw is priced at 4/1.
If you're expecting goals, Both teams to score is on offer at 4/6. You can also back Over 3.5 goals at 11/10, meanwhile the visitors are priced at 11/10 to score over 2.5 goals, a winning bet in their opening two matches.
Rayo Vallecano or Draw is on offer at 15/8 in the Double Chance market. The hosts are also available at 9/4 to win either half in this game, tempting odds if you're expecting another sluggish start from the Catalans, who were 2-0 down at the break last Saturday.
It's unclear how many minutes the likes of Lewandowski, Ferran and Rashford will get in this game. Given that, Raphinha may be a more reliable option for a goalscorer bet, with the Brazilian priced at 9/2 to score first, and 23/20 to score anytime. Meanwhile, Lamine Yamal is available at 8/5 to get on the scoresheet.
From a home perspective, you can back De Frutos to score anytime at 4/1, while Álvaro García is priced at 18/5 in the same market.

Rayo Vallecano vs Barcelona Stats
- All-Time H2H Record - Played 47, Rayo Vallecano 7 Wins, Barcelona 30 Wins & 10 Draws
- Rayo's last win came in 2023. Barcelona have won three straight.
- Both teams are 50% for BTTS.
- Barcelona have a 100% Over 2.5 Goals record this season in La Liga. Rayo Vallecano are at 50%.
Bet 1 - Rayo Vallecano +2.00 Handicap @ 8/11
This is a fixture that will cause some anxiety amongst Barça fans, given how they've struggled on this ground across the four years since Rayo returned to this level.
While there are subtle differences in the approach, Pérez has largely built on the strong foundations laid by Iraola, who he worked under as assistant at this club, before later taking charge in 2024. Rayo press aggressively, and are capable of exploiting the high line of the Spanish champions when the opportunity arises.
I can see this being another tricky 90 minutes for Barcelona, and I'm backing Rayo Vallecano +2.00 Handicap at 8/11, a winning bet in eight of the nine meetings between the clubs this decade.
Bet 2 - Both teams to score & Over 26.5 total shots @ 13/10
Rayo will not be as passive as the two teams that Barça have faced so far. Even against a conservative Levante, they conceded twice last weekend, and this will be a real test for a backline that has been weakened by the departure of Iñigo Martínez.
This is also a meeting between two teams who tend to have lots of shots. Last term, both ranked in the top five in La Liga for shots per game, with Rayo Vallecano averaging 13.6, and Barcelona 17.8.
Flick's side have had 50 shots already in just 180 minutes this term, and I'm using the Bet Builder to back Both teams to score and Over 26.5 total shots at 13/10.
