Rangers welcome Dynamo Kyiv to Hampden for this intriguing qualifier. The teams are all-square thanks to Cyriel Dessers’ late equaliser at the Arena Lublin seven days ago.
Gers now hold home advantage at the national stadium, and fans saw enough in the first leg to suggest the locals can progress and keep alive their dreams of making the competition proper. Will Philippe Clement’s team get the win needed?
Dynamo Kyiv took the lead against the run of play in the first leg and will feel desperately unlucky not to have won after conceding with the last kick of the game. The visitors must remain focused and patient if they are to get their names in the hat for the next round, and there’s everything to play at the home of Scottish football.
The pre-match betting odds available at Betfred make for interesting reading as we approach what appears to be a 50/50 content and straight shoot-out for a place in the playoffs.
Rangers enjoy the home advantage and are now favourites following that late smash-and-grab in Poland. Fancy a home win for Clement’s light blues? You can back Rangers to win the game without the next for extra time or penalties at odds of 10/11.
Dynamo Kyiv looked dangerous in the first leg and were good enough to take the lead thanks to an opening goal from experienced attacker Andriy Yarmolenko on 37 minutes. That would’ve proven the winner had his teammates held their concentration to the final whistle, but that late leveler piles pressure on the Ukrainian Premier League runners-up, who were so impressive in the previous round.
You can support Dynamo Kyiv at 11/4 or play another draw at an attractive 5/2, which is sure to be popular.
Rangers to win @ 10/11
Rangers were rather fortunate to salvage a draw from the first leg in Poland, but the squad deserves credit for pushing for a goal all the way to the final whistle.
The Scots went on the front foot early and looked like the most likely team to break the deadlock before they were caught on the break and punished by Yarmolenko's experience. Now back on Scottish soil, we expect Rangers to be sharper, fitter, and more ruthless in the final third.
There was a lot to like about Clement’s team in the first leg, and they also showed flashes of their potential against Hearts and Motherwell in the Premiership. We expect them to meet fire with fire in the return, and if Rangers get the first goal, they should have the quality to kill off the tie. There’s genuine big-game experience in the home squad, and that will make all the difference in such a tight contest.
Dessers to score @ 7/4
Rangers number nine Dessers impressed in Poland when battling hard in attack and never losing faith. He finally got the reward for his shift when gambling to slot home a Vaclav Cerny cross with 94 minutes on the clock.
The Nigerian forward continues to split opinion amongst the Ibrox faithful, but it’s difficult to argue with his stats and goals scored. He may not be Mr Reliable, but he’s certainly capable of scoring important goals.
Dessers will likely be asked to lead the line again when Kyiv come calling, and he’ll want to pick up where he left off, knowing fellow striker Danilo is fast approaching full fitness and waiting for his chance to shine. Rangers will create chances, and Dessers will get in positions to score goals.
