Rangers vs Alloa Athletic Prediction: Danilo can net a 3/1 winner

The new Scottish Premiership season is two games old, but it’s placed on the back burner this weekend to make way for the second round of the League Cup. Rangers host lower league Alloa Athletic at Ibrox on Saturday from 17:45 BST.

The big boys join the Scottish League Cup in the second round. Celtic host Falkirk on Friday, Aberdeen visit Greenock on Saturday afternoon, and Livingston play Hearts on Sunday in the standout fixtures. Rangers also enjoy the home advantage when League One side Alloa Athletic come to Govan.
The Gers are hot betting favourites to progress, but experienced followers of Scottish football know we can take nothing for granted in this tournament.
Rangers were eliminated from the Scottish Cup by Queens Park at this venue last season. The locals also have the distraction of playing Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League playoffs here on Tuesday. Manager Russell Martin will freshen up his team ahead of that season-defining showdown in midweek. Will that leave the door open for Alloa to catch their big-name opponents off guard?

Rangers vs Alloa Athletic Odds
- Rangers are about as red-hot a favourite as you can be with odds of just 1/25 implying they have an 96% of progressing in 90 minutes.
- The Draw is a massive 11/1, which equates to an 8% probability.
- The huge upset and Alloa Athletic win is rated as a 3% probability with odds of 28/1.

As you’d expect in the early round of the cup, when a Premiership team hosts lower-league opposition, the match-winner betting market is rather lopsided. Betfred traders price Rangers as if losing isn’t an option, and that’s understandable.
The light blues should win this match and do it in style. You can keep it simple and back Rangers to win at the 1/33 currently available on the Betfred website and app. Those odds mean it’s a wager best suited to your weekend accumulators, but will drive most bettors into the specials in search of value.
Alloa Athletic are living the dream. The Wasps won Scottish League Cup Group C ahead of Airdrieonians and Dundee, thanks to a perfect four wins and a dozen points from four games.
Andy Graham’s side scored seven goals and conceded only three. That purple patch includes a win over Dundee, and Alloa come to Ibrox hoping to derail another Premiership side before a huge audience. Victory on Saturday would be one of the club’s biggest achievements in recent times.
Rangers to win both halves
I expect Rangers to pull rank over Alloa Athletic and secure a win on Saturday evening without too much fuss. Martin will change things up from the team that lost 2-1 to Viktoria Plzen in the Czech Republic on Tuesday in a hard-fought Champions League qualifier. There’s little joy to be had in backing Rangers to win the match at short odds, but there’s enough in the special at Betfred to keep you entertained.
My main pick in Glasgow is for Rangers to win both halves. The available odds are good enough to bet on as a single, but will also do a great job in boosting the returns of your weekend accumulators and multiples.
Fresh from a narrow loss to better opposition, Rangers know victory is a must. They can’t run the risk of repeating the disaster of Queens Park last season. They’ll explode out of the traps and put their mark on this game early. Back Rangers to dominate by winning both halves.

Danilo to score first
With Cyriel Dessers carried off in midweek, Danilo will lead the line against Alloa. Saturday evening presents the Brazilian striker with a much-needed opportunity to get some goals under his belt and boost confidence ahead of the meeting with Club Brugge. He was the standout striker in pre-season and will show his quality against the Wasps.
Danilo’s stats and form show the number 99 hasn’t been hitting the numbers expected of him of late. But he’s a player returning from a lengthy injury and getting valuable minutes back in his legs. He has scored and performed against some big-name opponents in his career, and downing Alloa won’t be an issue. Back Danilo to score this game’s first goal.
