Team News
Sunderland will be hoping that defender Reinildo will be available to play in the derby after missing last week's defeat at Manchester City with a groin problem.
Luke O'Nien was sent off in that game and he will serve the first of a three-game suspension on Sunday. Habib Diarra (groin), Aji Alese (shoulder), Leo Hjelde (Achilles) and Dennis Cirkin (wrist) are set to be absent again due to injury.
Will Osula, Nick Pope (bothunspecified), Kieran Trippier (hamstring), Sven Botman (back), Joelinton (groin) and Emil Krafth (knee) are all injury doubts for Newcastle.
Joelinton was forced off in the Uefa Champions League clash at Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday, so his place in the team could be filled by Lewis Miley if he is unable to play on Sunday.
Sunderland vs Newcastle Predicted Lineups
- Sunderland: Roefs; Hume, Mukiele, Ballard, Alderete, Reinildo; Xhaka, Sadiki; Talbi, Isidor, Le Fee
- Newcastle: Ramsdale; Livramento, Thiaw, Burn, Hall; Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton; Murphy, Woltemade, Gordon
Sunderland are unbeaten at home in the league, having won four of the seven matches held here. They are 23/10 to come away with the victory.
The draw is valued at 12/5 (implied probability of 29.4%) with three stalemates having been played at the Stadium of Light this season, the same number of draws Newcastle have experienced on the road.
The visitors are 5/4 to claim what would be their second away win of the campaign in the top flight.
Sunderland vs Newcastle Stats
- Three of Newcastle's last four competitive matches have seen both teams score and over 3.5 goals
- Bruno Guimaraes (NEW) has scored in his last two league appearances
Both Teams To Score & Over/Under 3.5 Goals - Yes & Over @ 5/2
With so much at stake in this derby, I'm hesitant to go for a result because as they say, form goes out the window when these games roll around. Sunderland's home form has been excellent, and while Newcastle have not been great on their travels, they cannot be written off.
I think the best thing to go for here is goals, and I'm expecting plenty of them.
Combining the BTTS - Yes market with Over 3.5 Goals appeals because this selection has landed in three of Newcastle's last four competitive appearances, two of which came away from home (Everton and Bayer Leverkusen). It has also been a successful bet in each of the Magpies' past three road trips in the Premier League.
For Sunderland, both teams have scored and four goals struck across the whole match in each of their previous two home appearances in the league heading into this game. With the added stakes of pride and bragging rights, I am expecting both these trends to continue.

Anytime Goalscorer - Bruno Guimaraes @ 9/2
In the last few years, Bruno Guimaraes has become Newcastle's poster boy. He may be Brazilian but he's now as Geordie as you can get because you see how much love he has for his club and the city it represents.
As the team's captain, he will be looked to for guidance and inspiration on Wearside in the hopes of giving his supporters another cherished memory of him in a Newcastle shirt.
The midfielder has played a helping hand with the team's goal burden this term, with five goals already in the Premier League. His best return in a season for the Magpies was seven in 2023/24, so he is on course to surpass that total in the current campaign.
I think he offers good value to get on the scoresheet here because he has found the net in the last two league matches, and in a game of this magnitude, he is a player who can come up with an individual moment of brilliance.
