Ruben Amorim has been relieved of his duties as Manchester United head coach, leaving the Red Devils in sixth place in the Premier League. Here at Betfred Insights, we're assessing the top candidates that lead the betting for the next permanent manager role.
Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is a name that has been linked with the top job at the Theatre of Dreams for some time, and reports suggest that top dogs at Old Trafford have identified the Austrian as the top candidate to replace Amorim in the hotseat come the summer. Read on to find out more on his chances of becoming the next permanent Manchester United manager.

Here we are again. Manchester United have parted ways with another manager, and the search for the next gaffer in the dugout has started once more.
Former United midfielder, and current Under-18s boss, Darren Fletcher will take charge for the foreseeable future, and reports suggest that the Red Devils will then bring somebody in on an interim basis until the end of the season, before making a permanent appointment in the summer - which is the part I'm going to focus on.
That brings us onto Crystal Palace gaffer Glasner.
A defender by trade, Glasner spent almost all of his professional career with Austrian Bundesliga club SV Ried, winning the Austrian Cup in 1998 and 2011. Following his retirement, he became an assistant at RB Salzburg before returning to Ried as manager in 2014.
The Austrian then spent four seasons as manager of LASK, winning promotion to the Austrian top flight, and helping the club finish as runners-up in his final season, before departing for the German Bundesliga to work at Eintracht Frankfurt, where he won the Europa League, and Wolfsburg.
The work he did at those clubs led to Crystal Palace appointing the 51-year-old in 2024, and United are said to be huge admirers of what he's done at Selhurst Park, delivering FA Cup and Community Shield triumphs, as well as guiding the Eagles into Europe for the first time in their history.
And the timings could line up for United, with the Austrian out of contract with Palace at the end of the season.
Granted, there are some stylistic questions that may arise with the appointment of Glasner, particularly when 'United DNA' is thrown around like no tomorrow, and the majority of Old Trafford will have PTSD of three-at-the-back systems for the foreseeable.
However, one of the major criticisms of Amorim's style was his lack of adaptability - something Glasner has shown in spades during his time at Selhurst Park.
Amorim's controversial press conference after the draw with Leeds United at the weekend is seemingly the straw that broke the camels back, and Glasner has also faced tensions of his own with the higher ups at Crystal Palace, having publicly bristled against sales, while demanding more signings.
There were also reports last year that the Palace manager 'threatened' to leave the Eagles if they sold defender Marc Guehi on deadline day last summer, but that's something which Glasner went on to deny.
At the time of writing, Glasner is 2/1 second-favourite for the job, and him having prior proven Premier League experience is certainly a positive given that United's previous two managers came from the Eredivisie and Liga Portugal.
It feels as though United's next appointment will come from closer to home, and if that's the case Glasner is certainly in the running.
