Newcastle vs Arsenal Prediction: Back Gunners to get a BIG Away Win on Tyneside

Newcastle may be solid at the back but the impenetrability that has been crafted under manager Eddie Howe seems to have come at the cost of goals at the other end of the field. Three successive clean sheets but only one goal in that period, Arsenal will look to test their resolve on Sunday (16:00, Sky Sports Main Event).

While Mikel Arteta’s men make the trip to St James’ Park having salvaged a share of the points at home to Manchester City last weekend. After deploying a 3-4-2-1 shape at Bournemouth last Sunday, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is expected to revert to his preferred back four for the visit of Arsenal. A decision which puts the spotlight on which centre back pairing will be tasked with keeping the Gunners quiet at St James. 

Sven Botman and Malick Thiaw were tasked with Carabao Cup duties in midweek as the Magpies got the better of Bradford by four goals to one. However, it is unlikely that Dan Burn will be left in the cold for a fixture of this magnitude and therefore, it is he that is likely to start in place of Botman. 

Although Gabriel Martinelli has twice been deployed from the bench to good effect in the past fortnight, it does not seem to be enough for the Brazilian to start at Newcastle on Sunday and with Leandro Trossard expected to keep his place on the left, there is an enforced change on the right. 

A change that may have been made anyway but with Bukayo Saka's return from injury running parallel to Noni Madueke's newly diagnosed ailment, it means manager Mikel Arteta is spared a rather difficult decision when it comes to naming the Gunners' attacking triumvirate at the weekend. 

Newcastle vs Arsenal Odds

Newcastle are priced at 13/5 to win this game, with Arsenal the favourites at 6/5. That gives the away team an implied win probability of 45.5% while a draw can be backed at 23/10. 

BTTS has been priced at 10/11 and over 2.5 goals is 11/10, while Viktor Gyokeres is the favourite to score first at 9/2.  

Arsenal to win @ 6/5 

Although Arsenal have failed to win any of their last three trips to St James Park (all competitions), they soon arrive on Tyneside in a post-Isak era. An era that has been far from free flowing when it comes to attacking prowess at the start of the season and for this reason, the Magpies' home may not be as hostile. 

Which means Sunday could be fertile ground for Arsenal to return to winning ways in the Premier League and if they are to be considered the real deal in this season's title race, they will have to deal with what Newcastle throw at them. It might not be pretty but they should have enough to get the job done at 6/5. 

Under 2.5 Goals @ 8/11 

In each of the last six games between at Newcastle and Arsenal at St James' Park (Premier League and League Cup) there have been less than under 2.5 goals. In addition to this run of tight games, there has not been a draw in any of the half-dozen and the insights do not stop there either. 

No draws in that spell, no exceeding of three goals in total and whoever the winner is at full-time, also manages to win to nil. Not only is there no sharing of the points but there is no sharing of the goals either and with these defences being particularly mean this season, a tight encounter at 8/11 looks to be a shrewd pick.
