Manchester City vs Liverpool Prediction: Back a low-scoring game on Super Sunday

When Manchester City square off with Liverpool, the stakes are usually high and even though neither outfit are currently top of the Premier League, the stakes going into Sunday's meeting at the Etihad may be at their highest for some time. 

Neither outfit can afford defeat as Arsenal continue their march towards the end of season summit. Should defeat be the case, their respective title bid may already be up in smoke. For as important as Rodri is to Manchester City, there is a growing acceptance that the midfielder cannot play twice in a week. Minutes have to be managed as the 29-year-old suffers from one injury setback to the next – a point of serious frustration for manager Pep Guardiola. 

While even one appearance this week may be a stretch for Rodri and after falling short of fitness before City's midweek win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, it is believed he will lose the race to be fit on Sunday. That is what was referenced in the Friday presser, could this be a double bluff from the man who picks the team?  

After a wretched run of league results for Liverpool, Arne Slot may have stumbled across his most balanced side in weeks. Victory over Aston Villa last Saturday most welcomed. Problem is that this balance comes with neither of Alexsander Isak or Florian Wirtz in the starting eleven.  

Isak once again is expected to miss out due to injury and the Sweden international's absence means Hugo Etikite will spearhead Liverpool's attack. As for whether Wirtz starts, that decision rests on the shoulders of manager Slot. Does he go with Cody Gakpo out on the left or does he give a start to his other marquee summer signing?

Manchester City are priced as favourites at 9/10 to win this game, with Liverpool the relative underdogs at 11/4. That gives the home team an implied win probability of 52.6% while a draw can be backed at 3/1. 

BTTS has been priced at 1/2 and over 2.5 goals is also at 1/2, while Erling Haaland is the favourite to score first at 9/4.

When two teams known for their attacking football face each other, it tends to have an element of cancellation attached to it. Respective managers so obsessed in trying to thwart the opposition, that the encounter becomes largely distilled to a possession-based battle in the middle of the park – something that tends to be the case when Manchester City and Liverpool face each other. 

The last four league games between the two sides have seen under 2.5 goals ticked off in each of them. A pair of 1-1 draws in the 2023/24 season, Liverpool winning 2-0 home and away last season and due to a paucity of goals these past two campaigns, I think the value is in three total goals not being exceeded on Sunday.  

Erling Haaland to have four or more shots @ 11/10 

Backing Erling Haaland to score on Sunday almost feels like a cheat code but because of its high probability, it is not something that lends itself to the best possible price before Sunday – that and there is no guarantee he scores against Liverpool either. 

However, there is almost a guarantee that the Norwegian forward will have plenty of attempts to score at the Etihad. The 25-year-old has already had 43 this season in the Premier League, an average of 4.3 per game to date. With that in mind, I am backing him to have four more in his bid to breach Liverpool's defence on Sunday.
