Manchester City vs Arsenal Prediction: 0-0 draw on the cards?

Although this encounter is not strictly season defining due to the number of games still remaining, there is a sense of whatever happens at the Etihad on Sunday will dictate the direction of this season’s Premier League trophy. Manchester City play host to Arsenal; the stakes could not be higher. 

For City, they know they have been given a huge opportunity to reel in the Gunners after last week’s combination of league results. Going into Sunday's top of the table clash at the Etihad, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has one major concern in terms of his starting eleven. A name that on paper does not stand out to be the most important but then again, Nico O'Reilly does not play his football on that surface. 

The City youngster has been a vitally important part of City's purple patch as of late - none more so than his recent double in the Carabao Cup final but after being subbed off due to a hamstring strain at Chelsea last Sunday, the 21-year-old will be given every opportunity to prove his fitness. 

As for opponents Arsenal, they will arrive in Manchester with questions over the fitness of their own left back. Ricardo Calafiori scored in the 2-2 draw between the two sides back in September 2024, the Italian missed the 0-0 draw with Sporting in midweek and may lose the race against time for Sunday. 

Should that be the case, then Arsenal will once again look to Piero Hincapie to fill the void. The Ecuadorian has had his own recent injury issues but played a key role in getting the Gunners over the line in their Champions League quarter-final. Now he must do the same in the Premier League title race.

Manchester City are priced as favourites at 4/5 to win this game, with Arsenal the outsiders at 10/3. That gives the home team an implied win probability of 55.6% while a draw can be backed at 11/4. 

BTTS has been priced at 5/6 and over 2.5 goals is 10/11, while Erling Haaland is the favourite to score first at 11/4.

Manchester City hitting form at the right time of the season, Arsenal hitting the skids at precisely the same juncture. Their recent Carabao Cup final meeting serving as the springboard for Pep Guardiola's men, it has seemingly placed their nearest rivals in a tailspin after Wembley woe. 

Which is why I am going to keep this rather simple and go with the single. City have their tails up after also beating Liverpool and Chelsea in League Cup. The Gunners will not be playing to win anyhow and I think that will prove to be their ultimate undoing as the title race heats up further with a home win.

After the reading the first tip, you will obviously be aware that both of them cannot be winners. However, I feel that if City do not win on Sunday, the prospect of a goalless draw at the Etihad then ends up becoming the next most realistic outcome. Remember this is a must not lose game for Arsenal, rather a must win. 

Just as we saw in midweek, Mikel Arteta managed to squeeze the life out of the clash between Arsenal and Sporting, his players will be more than capable of doing the same on Sunday. It was precisely what happened when the two teams met at the Etihad in March 2024.  

Therefore, if it is to be a draw, I do not envisage it being one where goals are traded at either end but if the points are shared in this manner, there will still be huge celebrations from the travelling Arsenal support.
