Arsenal to win
I will back the home team to get the job done here - even though the pressure is hotting up in this title race. The Gunners had a horror show at Molineux, but their composure to recover against Spurs was impressive.
After a kind Champions League draw confidence will be high they can succeed in several competitions this term. Meanwhile, Chelsea drew 1-1 with Burnley last time out, and Wesley Fofana was sent off and so will miss the trip to the Emirates. I don’t think they are a particularly poor team under Liam Rosenior but this is as tough a test as any in the top flight.
Arsenal have won 10 of their 13 home games so Chelsea should come up short, with Arsenal set to take another important step towards the title.
Viktor Gyokeres to score
Viktor Gyokeres is starting to catch fire at Arsenal. He’s now up to 15 goals in all competitions for the season, and he put in arguably his best performances in an Arsenal shirt against Tottenham, scoring twice in a man of the match showing.
I’m always going to be positive on Gyokeres given his Coventry City past - but it does finally feel like Arsenal are learning to play to his strengths. Get people around him, and give him the ball in front of goal, and he will score plenty of goals. Happy to back him again here given he should be full of confidence.
Arsenal vs Chelsea Stats
- Arsenal have won 10 of their 13 home games
- Viktor Gyokeres has scored 15 goals in all competitions
- Moises Caicedo has 11 yellow cards this season
Moises Caicedo to get booked
I think we will probably get a few cards on Sunday given the high profile of this game and the London rivalry that comes with it. My best pick for a yellow card is not a surprise, with Moises Caicedo surely the most likely candidate for a booking.
He’s got 11 yellows in 35 games in all competitions this term, with eight of those coming in the Premier League. With three in his last five league games, and up against the likes of Declan Rice and Eberechi Eze, I think he is going to find himself cautioned once more.
Over 8.5 match shots on target
I think we may get an end-to-end encounter here given Chelsea’s attacking verve under Rosenior so far. I know some will be concerned about the second-leg showing Chelsea put in in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, but ultimately I think both teams will have learnt attacking lessons from that, which ended 1-0 to the Gunners late on.
They only had two shots on target each on the night, but the game state was very strange indeed. Arsenal had the lead from leg one, and didn’t need to risk flooding forward. Chelsea only ventured out of their defensive shape in the final few minutes - and I hope they will be slightly more adventurous, especially if they concede first.
