Spain are the current European champions and the current holders of this competition, while they thrilled us all with that outrageous 5-4 semi-final success over France.

Spain to win

Although Portugal have done incredibly well to reach this final and they are clearly one of the best teams in Europe, they are no match for Spain. I would make Luis de la Fuente’s men the best on the planet right now, and when the World Cup rolls around next summer, I think they will be favourites to lift the biggest trophy in football for the second time in their history. Now unbeaten in 19 internationals, they are going to take some stopping. 

They’ve moved away from the tiki-taka era and are now an efficient goalscoring machine that can win in a variety of ways. We saw them grind out a win against England in the Euro 2024 final, while they beat the Netherlands on penalties in the quarter-finals of this competiton, before scoring five past France. 

That performance was stunning to watch, as they went 5-1 up against Kylian Mbappe and Co. before letting three goals slip late on. The way they let the French back into things is a slight concern, but I just feel their attacking strength will be too much for Portugal to handle. It feels as though Spain are potentially at the start of another winning era and they will hope to make it two trophies in two years by taking Nations League glory on Sunday night.

Lamine Yamal to score 2+

I know Ousmane Dembele is the favourite to win the Ballon d’Or after helping PSG to a wonderful treble, but for me, Lamine Yamal is the best player in the world right now. It feels bonkers to even utter those words given he is not 18 until next month, but the performances he is putting in are just spectacular. 

For club and county he just continues to perform on the big stage, and his brace in the semi-final was sensational. With all due respect to Mikel Oyarzabal, who is likely to lead the line, he isn’t the biggest goal threat and so it falls on Yamal to produce the goals from the right. That left foot is so dangerous, and I think he will once again steal the headlines in Munich, so let’s back him to score two goals or more. 

Portugal vs Spain Odds

Over 3.5 goals 

I don’t see this game being a particularly tight encounter and surely it makes sense to back goals given the attacking talent on show. I think Portugal will be able to trouble this Spain backline that was exposed at times against France and has now conceded 11 goals in their last four games. 

Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo will be licking their lips at the prospect of filling their boots, while I’ve already spoken about the strength of Spain’s own forward line. I think over 3.5 goals is a fairly safe selection, and I am half-expecting another wild encounter in this final.
