Portsmouth vs Derby Prediction: Relegation rivals ready to cancel each other out

Portsmouth's home form has been their salvation and they will feel they can add another three points to their survival tally by beating relegation rivals Derby on Saturday.

Defeats at Millwall and Coventry City have left Pompey 17th in the Championship table but they have won 10 of their last 14 at home, most recently beating Blackburn 1-0 on March 29. Read on for my Portsmouth vs Derby predictions.

Derby are 21st after losing just one of their last six, most recently drawing 0-0 with promotion-chasing Burnley.

However, despite their turnaround under John Eustace, the Rams have won only two of their 20 away games this season.

With little between the clubs in the table, a share of the spoils looks the most likely outcome.

Defender Alexander Milosevic looks set to add to Portsmouth's extensive injury woes after missing Wednesday's defeat at Coventry with a calf issue.

However, another loanee, Rob Atkinson, is a candidate to come back into contention for John Mousinho's side.

Derby also have a litany of injuries, with Callum Elder again a doubt after missing the last two games with a knock.

Fellow defender Sondre Langas will also be assessed after recently playing through a knee injury.

Portsmouth are 13/10 to grab an 11th home league win of the season, with Derby 12/5 for a third away victory and the draw 21/10.

The Rams won December's reverse fixture 4-0 and a repeat case of over 3.5 goals is 4/1, while another 2-2, the outcome when they met at Fratton Park last season in League 1, is 16/1.

Mousinho's hosts start the weekend on 45 points, three clear of Derby and also have the same cushion over Cardiff, who are 22nd.

Of their 45 points, 35 have been earned at Fratton Park, where they have won four of their last five, the one blip being a 2-1 defeat to bottom club Plymouth Argyle.

John Eustace has undoubtedly overseen an improvement since replacing Paul Warne as Derby manager but they lost 1-0 last weekend at Swansea, their 13th reverse on the road in 2024-25.

It was always going to be tough for these clubs after coming up from League One.

Derby's home win in the reverse game was a bit of an outlier in their recent matches – the pair had drawn their previous four meetings – and another share of the spoils could be the case on Saturday, with 1-1 priced at 5/1.

Derby's Marcus Harness hit a run of form in early March, scoring in the win over his hometown club Coventry before bagging a brace in the 3-2 victory at Plymouth.

Harness will return to one of his former sides on Saturday, having spent three years at Fratton Park before joining Ipswich in 2022.

The 29-year-old was often a substitute under Warne but has become a regular starter since Eustace came in and may have extra motivation to find the net against his former club.
