It’s almost the ‘title decider’ in the Portuguese league when Porto host Sporting on Monday night, kick-off time 20:45.

Jamie Pacheco isn’t touching the match winner market with a bargepole and is instead saving his selections for the anytime scorer market. Let's check out Jamie's Porto vs Sporting Predictions for Monday night...

Porto vs Sporting Preview & Team News:

Porto

He probably won't get it, but Francesco Farioli would be a worthy winner of the UEFA Coach of the Year award. Yes, the Portuguese league isn't the Premier League or La Liga, but it's still pretty competitive and his record this year - in his first season at the club, no less - is almost spotless.

'Almost' simply because he failed to win two of his 20 games – a draw with Benfica and a shock loss to Casa Pia last week - ruining what is almost a perfect record.

As if any further proof of his and Porto's quality was needed, they also finished fifth in the Europa League table, winning five out of eight. They also knocked Benfica out of the Cup.

Of course, it helps to have a man on your team like Samu, who has 19 goals this season.

Rodrigo Mora, one of those small, skilful, brilliant Portuguese playmakers in the Bernardo Silva mould, seems to have glue on his feet when it comes to holding the ball and has been a big contributor, too.

In goal Diego Costa, Portugal's Number 1, no less, has been his usual reliable self and a big reason why they've kept just six goals in 20 matches.

Sporting CP

Sporting can consider themselves pretty unlucky to only be in second place, given a return of 51 points from 20 matches.

And if Porto's efforts in the Europa League have been impressive, save a thought for Sporting's own efforts, finishing seventh, ahead of Man City in goal difference no less and going through to the next round without the need for a Play-Off.

Morten Hjulmand, who with his all-action game, physicality and leadership qualities would make for an excellent midfielder in the Premier League has been good, as ever.

And if Porto has Samu, Sporting has Luis Suarez, the Colombian striker who has 26 goals for the season.  Of those, only four weren't for Sporting (obviously for Colombia), and all in the same game. Which brings me to this stat, already mentioned in my 3-3-3 column a couple of weeks ago, but one which I simply can't resist repeating:

"Sporting have a striker called Luis Suarez. In 2025, he netted four goals in a World Cup qualifier against Venezuela, a rare achievement that made him just the second player ever to score four in a single CONMEBOL qualifying match. The only other player to accomplish this was his namesake, Uruguay's Luis Suárez, who hit four against Chile in 2011 — making the parallel even more striking."

It was no surprise that it was Suarez who popped up with a 90-minute winner last week against Nacional.

Porto vs Sporting Predicted Lineups

  • Porto: Diogo Costa, Alberto Costa, Jan Bednarek, Nehuén Pérez, Francisco Moura, Victor Froholdt, Alan Varela, João Mário, Borja Sainz, Samu Aghehowa. Rodrigo Mora
  • Sporting: Rui Silva, Araujo, Gonçalo Inácio, Ousmane Diomande, Iván Fresneda, Morten Hjulmand, Hidemasa Morita, Francisco Trincão, Geny Catamo, Pedro Gonçalves, Luis Suarez.

Porto vs Sporting Odds

Porto are 23/20, implied probability, 47%. Sporting are 12/5, 30%. The draw is 21/10, 32%.

The last four matches between these two at Porto have produced three draws and a 3-0 Porto win.

I wouldn't go as far as saying 'anything could happen here' but I'll go as far as saying it's extremely hard to pick one of the three. Porto would be pretty happy with the draw given their lead in the table, and Sporting wouldn't see it as disastrous given who they're up against, but then again, there's more to football than intention and ambition.

Best leave it alone from a betting perspective.

Porto vs Sporting Stats:

  • Porto have conceded just six goals in the Primeira Liga this season through 20 matches.
  • Sporting are nearly as good - only 11 times have they conceded in 20 top-flight matches.
  • The visitors' have also scored 52 times in those games.
  • Both sides are in the bottom five in regard to cards being shown with 46 and 44 respectively. Santa Clara top that with a whopping 64.
  • Sporting take on average 18.7 shots per 90 minutes. Porto are third with 14.4.

Over/Under 2.5 Goals

Will we get goals? Well, three of the last four between these two at Porto produced three or more goals, Porto have a 55% strike rate for overs this season, and Sporting have a 60% strike rate, so on those raw stats alone, you could argue that the 6/5 is something of a value bet.

The slight problem with that is that this is no ordinary game. If it's 1-1 after 70 minutes Porto will have little or no intention of scoring a second, nor are Sporting are not likely to go for broke; so you can see why it's a little on the dangerous side.

Anytime Scorer

The better bet is to assume we'll get at least two goals in the game and go with the two players who are by far the most likely to get one.

Samu is 7/5, and though he hasn't been in the greatest of form of late in getting just one in his last five, he's still a class act, as his scoring record shows.

And then of course, there's our man Suarez. 22 for Sporting this season, five in his last four, takes penalties, by far their best chance of a goal. The 13/8 is a pretty good price.

Famous last words, but I'd be pretty surprised if at least one of those two doesn't score, which of course would mean a profit.
