There’s a south coast derby on Saturday lunchtime in the Championship, as Plymouth Argyle host Southampton. We’ve taken a look at the game and given you our suggested best bets.

Plymouth vs Southampton Tips

  • Southampton to win and Both Teams To Score – 5/2
  • Adam Armstrong first goalscorer – 9/2

Despite being two divisions apart last season, both these sides have has a good start to life in the Championship, with a win and a draw apiece.

Plymouth (11/4) hosted Huddersfield Town on opening day and despite being out played for chunks of the game, came out as 3-1 winners.

They then followed that up with a 0-0 draw away at Watford, to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

That could be severely tested against a Southampton (10/11) side that dispatched Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough, before a ridiculous 4-4 thriller against Norwich City.

Russell Martin will be hoping to seriously tighten up that leaky defence before the visit to Home park on Saturday afternoon.

Team news:

Steven Schumacher will likely opt to maintain an unchanged side for the visit of the Saints, with Aston Villa loanee Kaine Kessler-Hayden still a doubt after missing the Watford game.

Meanwhile, Martin is sweating on the fitness of Will Smallbone, who picked up a knock on the ankle against Norwich and might miss the trip along the south coast here.

Southampton to win and Both Teams To Score – 5/2

Southampton may have lost their talisman James Ward-Prowse to West Ham recently but they have managed to hold on to the core of their squad, which frankly looks too good for the second tier.

The nature of the 4-4 draw will have concerned Russell Martin but he will be glad to see his side score six in their opening two fixtures and they should have too much firepower for a well organised but ultimately lower quality Argyle outfit.

That being said, I firmly expect Plymouth to get on the scoresheet here and BTTS has landed in both Saints games.

Adam Armstrong first goalscorer – 9/2

The 26-year-old looked red hot at this level, back in 2021, when playing for Blackburn Rovers and scoring 44 goals in two seasons.

He did, however, struggle in the Premier League but has looked a cut above since his return to the Championship.

Armstrong has three goals in his opening two games including a brace of penalties against Norwich.

Betfred are also running their famed Double Delight / Hat-Trick Heaven offer on this match, meaning should Armstrong score first and then net again, you will be paid at double the odds (9/1). Should he score a hat-trick you would be paid at triple the odds! (27/2).
