Oxford vs Sunderland Prediction: U’s to grind out result against beleaguered Black Cats

A victory on Saturday (15:00) would guarantee Oxford United's stay in the EFL Championship for another season, and Gary Rowett's side couldn't handpick many better opponents to face at the Kassam Stadium than Sunderland, who have lost their last three games and cannot move higher or lower than their current standing of fourth.
Below are my Oxford vs Sunderland predictions, complete with all the latest team news and match odds, as the U's look to clinch survival in front of their supporters.
Oxford vs Sunderland Betting Tips
- Double Chance & Over/Under +1.5 Total Goals - Oxford or Draw & Under 1.5 @ 100/30
- Player to Receive a Card - Cameron Brannagan (OXF) @ 3/1

Team News
Ciaron Brown (knee) and Siriki Dembele (hamstring) will miss United's final two fixtures due to injury, while defender Hidde ter Avest (concussion) is yet to receive the green light for a return to action.
However, Sam Long should be available after missing Easter Monday's 1-1 draw at Cardiff City following the birth of his child.
Matt Phillips and Max Harris are among those who could come into Gary Rowett's thinking for Saturday's starting XI.
Oxford vs Sunderland Stats
- Sunderland have only scored once across last four games
- Oxford have won three of their last seven matches by a 1-0 scoreline
- Cameron Brannagan (OXF) has received a club-high nine yellows in 24/25
Sunderland's lengthy injury list includes Ajibola Alese (broken leg), Jayden Danns (back), Romaine Mundle, Daniel Ballard (both hamstring), Ian Poveda (leg) and Niall Huggins (knee), while Dennis Cirkin (hamstring) and Jenson Seelt (knee) are touch-and-go following recent issues.
However, Black Cats head coach Regis Le Bris is boosted by the return of Trai Hume, who was suspended for Easter Monday's 1-0 home defeat to Blackburn Rovers.
United have won three of their last seven games, and they are 21/10, or a 32.3% chance, to make it four from eight on Saturday and confirm their survival in England's second tier. Sunderland, winless in their last four, are 7/5 favourites to claim all three points, implying a 41.7% probability.
The draw is priced at 11/5, both teams to score at 10/11, and over 2.5 total goals at 6/5.
Sunderland star Wilson Isidor (2/1) heads the anytime goalscorer market, followed by teammate Eliezer Mayenda (12/5) and U's pair Max Harris (13/5) and Tom Bradshaw (11/4).
Double Chance & Over/Under +1.5 Total Goals - Oxford or Draw & Under 1.5 @ 100/30
Sunderland have had a torrid time of it recently, taking just one point from the last 12 on offer, and they've scored just once in that horrific run. The Black Cats blanked in a goalless draw at Norwich City and in 1-0 home defeats to Swansea City and Blackburn (both 0-1). Prior to those results, they lost 3-0 at Coventry City and beat Millwall (1-0) and West Bromwich Albion (0-1) back-to-back, meaning they have struck just three times in their last seven games.
The U's, meanwhile, have kept two clean sheets in their last five matches, conceding just five times in that run, and they head into Saturday's contest knowing that even a draw could be enough to secure their survival, depending on other results.
As such, I expect Rowett, as ever, to set up his side resolutely, ensuring they are hard to beat. Watford and Sheffield United both found it impossible to penetrate United's back line recently, each losing 1-0 at the Kassam, and a confidence-stricken Sunderland side could face similar issues on Saturday.
The hosts are hardly prolific, either, with only two clubs scoring fewer goals than the U's (44) this season, and they've struck just four times across their last five outings, so the double chance result on United and under 1.5 total goals looks the best bet here at 100/30.

Player to Receive a Card - Cameron Brannagan (OXF) @ 3/1
U's captain Cameron Brannagan was the hero for his side in Cardiff on Monday, unleashing a sensational strike from distance past Bluebirds goalkeeper Ethan Horvath to make it 1-1. It was only the 28-year-old's third goal of the season, and it's his defensive contribution that's probably been more valuable in the Championship.
The Liverpool Academy graduate is averaging 1.7 tackles per game in the second tier, but his challenges have sometimes gone over the edge.
Brannagan is averaging a foul per game in 2024/25, and he's received nine yellows for his misdemeanours, most recently going into the referee's notebook on April 9 in a defeat to Queens Park Rangers (1-3).
On Saturday, Brannagan is likely to be tasked with containing the talents of Sunderland star Jobe Bellingham, who was fouled four times against Blackburn on Monday, and is averaging 1.4 fouls won per game for the campaign as a whole.
A yellow for Brannagan looks likely on Saturday as he looks to lead his side over the line against the Black Cats.
