Oxford United
The home side have not been overly busy in the transfer market this summer but there is certainly plenty of excitement over the arrival of 25-year-old Brian De Keersmaecker. The Belgian midfielder was the player of the season at Dutch Eredivisie side Heracles Almelo for the 24/25 campaign. He offers plenty going forward from his deep position and scored five times in the Netherlands last term with three assists.
Two strikers have been brought in on loan in the hope to fire the goals to keep the club safe. Nik Prelec scored six times in 31 appearances on loan at Austria Wien last term and will spend his third successive season away from Cagliari on a temporary basis. He’s not expected to feature in this one however.
Will Lankshear though has a chance having made the move from Tottenham Hotspur just this week. The youngster scored in the Europa League against Galatasaray and is one for the future at the Premier League club.
Ruben Rodrigues and Idris El Mizouni were the two most prominent players to leave in the summer. The former swapped the Championship for Brazil’s Serie A and a transfer to Esporte Clube Vitoria with the latter making the much more local move to Leyton Orient in League 1.
Portsmouth
The only first-team player from the 24/25 season not available on Saturday (aside from returning loans) will be winger Matt Ritchie. The former Newcastle man has agreed a departure from Fratton Park should a team be willing to offer him more first team opportunities and has not been allocated a squad number
No fewer than six players could make their Pompey debuts this weekend. Ibane Bowat suffered a season-ending injury in training just days after signing from Fulham last autumn. He’s now fit and could be involved from the bench, although Regan Poole and Conor Shaughnessy are expected to start the campaign as the first choice centre-backs.
Former West Brom man John Swift joined on a free and could well start alongside another newcomer in Mark Kosznovszky in the middle of the park.
Hopes are high on the south coast for Australian attacking midfielder Adrian Segecic. The 21-year-old has the World Cup in his sights and has every opportunity with a good start to the season to be involved for his country next summer.
Lastly there is a potential battle for the right-wing spot. Yang min-Hyeok is set to join from Tottenham Hotspur in a season-long loan deal, which is expected to be confirmed by the registration deadline for Saturday. He will challenge Harvey Blair for the position vacated by the aforementioned Ritchie along with Florian Bianchini. The 24-year-old has arrived from Swansea for the campaign in a similar agreement to min-Hyeok.
Oxford vs Portsmouth Predicted Lineups:

Oxford vs Portsmouth Odds
- Oxford are 13/8 to earn the three points. This equates to a 38% probability according to implied odds.
- Portsmouth are slightly longer at 15/8 to win the match. The traders think that is a 35% chance of happening.
- The Draw is 23/10 coming in as a 30% shot.
- It is one of those rare games where Both Teams to Score is not expected. 4/5 (56%) for Yes and 1/1 (50%) for No.
- It is a similar story when it comes to Over/Under 2.5 Goals with the former 11/10 (48%) and the latter just 8/11 (58%)
- Portsmouth striker Colby Bishop is the top-choice to score anytime at 2/1 (33%)

Match Result - Draw @ 23/10
Some colleagues here on the Betfred Insights team are doing weekly correct score picks for the EFL Championship. You can read their full Championship Week 1 Predictions behind the link and I can that both Conor and Nick have gone for the 1-1 draw. That is exactly the same scoreline that I’m feeling. Hope it isn't just groupthink.
The question marks over Colby Bishop’s availability certainly don’t help the visitors. Pompey consistently look a better team with their talisman up top but he is nursing a groin injury, which had ruled him out. We understand however that he has been involved in first team training this week, so let's not rule him out just yet.
John Mousinho’s men were not good on the road last time around, with only Plymouth Argyle picking up fewer points on their travels. One of their three victories away from Fratton Park did come here in a 0-2 win in a game extremely low on quality.
We’d be surprised to see an open, exciting game and a low-scoring draw seems extremely plausible. 0-0 (17/2) or the 1-1 (5/1) feel like great chances, so to get 23/10 for any scoreline resulting in the points being shared feels good to me.

Callum Lang to be booked @ 11/4
Usually when looking at the ‘to be carded’ markets, we instinctively gravitate towards defender or defensive midfielders. When it comes to Pompey though, of the five players who saw a flash of yellow last season seven or more times, not one of them was a defender by trade (although Marlon Pack filled in on occasion).
Leading the way was midfielder Andre Dozzell, who amassed 11 but it'll be interesting to see whether he starts. One man who looks guaranteed to do so however is Callum Lang, who was booked 10 times in all competitions despite missing the best part of two full months through injury.
The attacking midfielder works extremely hard and tracks back but is also a bit of a fiery character who likes to get involved. Put that altogether and you have a player who is likely to pick up a fair few cards this season and we would not be surprised to see that trend start on Saturday.

Oxford vs Portsmouth Correct Score Prediction
- Oxford 1-1 Portsmouth @ 5/1
If you like a bet on the Correct Score market, then this would be our top selection. Goals don't exactly flow when these two teams meet and 1-1 would have been a winner twice in the past five matches between these two sides. We don't expect a classic at the Kassam but enough for both sets of fans to leave without being overly disheartened.
