Lyon Feminines vs Benfica Women Prediction: Lyon to show no mercy in second chapter

Lyon are in the box seat after coming from behind to win 2-1 in Lisbon though head coach Sonia Bompastor will be expecting a more complete 90-minute performance from her side in the second leg of their quarter-final tie.

The eight-time European champions were made to work hard by a plucky Benfica who deserved the lead given them by Andreia Faria.

But strikes from Delphine Cascarino and Sara Dabritz turned the tie on its head and by the end Lyon should have won by a more convincing scoreline.

  • Over 4.5 goals @ 9/4

Team News

Veteran defender Wendie Renard is pushing for her first start for Lyon in over three months after recovering from injury. Ada Hegerberg is a doubt.

Benfica’s Brazilian striker Nicole Raysla limped out of the first leg early and is unlikely to be involved.

Match Odds

Lyon are a 1/8, or a 88.9% chance, and since they are unbeaten at the Parc Olympique in just over a year and unbeaten in any game - home or away - this season, it’s a hard price to dispute.

Benfica are 12/1, the draw 6/1 and it’s 6/5 that lightning strikes twice and both sides score.

Olympique Lyonnais win and Both Teams to Score - No @ 4/5

Lyon find themselves in the unusual position of having work to do in the second leg after making hard work of winning 2-1 at Benfica last week.

In fairness, even though they were slow out of the blocks in the Portuguese capital they finished the match like an express train and could easily have had the tie wrapped up.

That Benfica found the net will have frustrated Bompastor - it was the first goal the French giants had conceded in their last four matches.

But Benfica failed to win any of their three group-stage road trips, drawing at both Eintracht Frankfurt and Rosengard after being crushed 5-0 at Barcelona.

That loss to nil at Barca was telling and hints at the difference between a true giant - as Lyon are - and an emerging side like Benfica.

Over 4.5 goals @ 9/4

Betting five goals or more in a Champions League quarter-final might seem more than risky but it’s well within Lyon’s range.

They piled up 21 shots in Lisbon last week and with slightly more accuracy and composure in front of goal as the Lionesses wilted, they could easily have chalked up six or seven.

And Lyon can do those numbers. They have scored five goals or more in a game 11 times this season with 12 games producing over 4.5 goals in total.

Benfica’s 5-0 drubbing at Barcelona in the autumn is also a timely reminder of what can befall an underdog if one of the game’s big guns gets in the mood.
