Liverpool vs Southampton Prediction: Routine victory for the Reds

Liverpool pulled off one of the greatest away wins in the Champions League on Wednesday as they snatched a 1-0 victory at Paris Saint-Germain, despite being on the back foot for the majority of the game. This confidence will set the Reds up nicely for their return to Premier League action on Saturday (15:00) when they host bottom-ranked club Southampton at Anfield.
The Saints have won just two games all season in the top flight and are on a run of three consecutive defeats. Read on for my Liverpool vs Southampton predictions, accompanied by the latest match odds and team news.
Liverpool have won their last three home league games coming into this fixture and they are the heavy favourites to claim the three points at 1/8. Better value can be found in backing them to win to nil at 19/20 (which has an implied probability of 51.3%) because this was the outcome in their past two games in the top flight.
The draw is available at 9/1 because only two of their 13 Premier League appearances at Anfield have ended in a stalemate and they are facing a side with just nine points from their opening 27 matches.
Southampton are 20/1 to stun the league leaders, but they have won just one fixture on the road in the league.
Mohamed Salah has been the first goalscorer in two of Liverpool's most recent Premier League games and he is 9/4 to open the scoring on Saturday.
Team News
Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo is a doubt to feature at the weekend after he missed the trip to Paris because of a knock. Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez (both hamstring) and Tyler Morton (shoulder) are the other Reds players in the treatment room.
After scoring the winning goal from the bench against PSG, Harvey Elliott will be itching to start against the Saints, which you'd say he has earned, but Arne Slot has best-utilised him as an impact substitute this season.
Curtis Jones and Darwin Nunez are others who will be looking to get the nod, with both having helped Liverpool to victory in Parc des Princes.
Salah had an off day against PSG but his numbers in the Premier League have been astonishing. He has netted 25 goals and provided 17 assists so far and he has had a goal involvement in each of the past 11 Premier League matches for his team.
Dominik Szoboszlai has been an energetic presence in recent weeks and he looks to be growing into the player Liverpool signed from RB Leipzig.
Southampton are sweating over the fitness of full-backs James Bree and Kyle Walker-Peters, who both picked up injuries in the recent 4-0 defeat at Chelsea. Former Liverpool man Adam Lallana (thigh), Ross Stewart, Juan Larios (both fitness) and Ryan Fraser (calf) are also absent for the visitors.
There is hope that Jan Bednarek will be declared fit to play after he missed out against Chelsea, while Lesley Ugochukwu is expected to return to the engine room after missing the game against the Blues due to the terms of his loan agreement.
Liverpool to win to nil @ 19/20
Liverpool have been the best team in the top flight this season, largely because they have had consistency. This has seen them stretch a 13-point lead at the summit and no one looks to pose any real danger to them securing their second Premier League title.
Against a wailing Southampton side, who are currently on track to go down as one of the worst sides on record in this division, I think the Reds should have more than enough to win this game to nil.
They are at home and boast the best player in the country in Salah, who is posting out-of-this-world numbers in 2024/25. As well as his magic, you have the likes of Diogo Jota, Nunez, Luis Diaz, Szoboszlai and more who can chip in with goals, as shown by their tally of 66 in 28 games.
Only five of their 13 home games this term have seen them win to nil but this does include their latest appearance against Newcastle United on February 26. Additionally, each of their last four fixtures in all competitions have seen them win without conceding a goal.
I think this trend will continue against the Saints on Saturday.

Over 3.5 Liverpool goals @ 6/5
There have been three occasions this campaign in which Liverpool have scored four or more goals in the league. Those games were against Tottenham Hotspur (6-3), West Ham United (5-0) and Ipswich Town (4-1).
I think Southampton could become the latest recipients for a thrashing at the hands of the Reds because they have the worst defensive record in the division (65 goals conceded).
The Saints head to Merseyside off the back of consecutive 4-0 defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea too. So here is another trend we might see continue in the Premier League this weekend.
