A triumphant Liverpool are due a hero's welcome at Anfield on Wednesday night (KO, 20:00), as they host Southampton in the FA Cup fifth-round.

Jurgen Klopp's side won the hearts of many on Sunday as an inexperienced outfit outclassed lavish spenders Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final.

The German is counting the cost of victory though, as he is set to be without a host of stars in midweek.

The visitors, meanwhile, are hurting after two straight defeats which have dented their automatic promotion hopes in the Championship.

  • Cody Gakpo to score 2+ goals @ 17/2

Team News

It remains to be seen exactly who, and how many, will be passed fit for Liverpool in midweek.

Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Thiago, Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones, Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez were all left out of the squad on Sunday due to injury, and Ryan Gravenberch added to those woes when he was forced off in the first-half.

It would be a surprise if any of those players are back in time for Wednesday, while there are doubts over the fitness of others, primarily Wataru Endo, who was seen leaving Wembley in a protective boot.

Caoimhin Kelleher should start in goal again, but it's unlikely that Virgil van Dijk will be risked after the energy he exerted across 120-plus minutes. Jarell Quansah is a lock-in to start at centre-back, with either Joe Gomez or Ibrahima Konate asked to go again alongside him. Conor Bradley and Kostas Tsimikas should complete the back-four.

Teenagers James McConnell and Bobby Clark will be handed starts after their superb displays as substitutes on Sunday, and Alexis Mac Allister is likely to be deployed as the experienced man alongside them in midfield after the Argentine was taken off before the 90 against Chelsea.

Like Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo was substituted before the end of regulation time, and should be a guaranteed starter against the Saints. The Dutchman could be joined by Jayden Danns - who led the line with authority in extra time - and 16-year-old Trey Nyoni, who is looking to make his debut. Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott will be given rests after playing the entire game on the weekend.

Southampton started many of their fringe players in the fourth-round against Watford, with the likes of Joe Lumley, Jayden Meghoma, Sekou Mara and Tyler Dibling handed opportunities.

Whether they go quite so 'weak' at Anfield, especially after two straight defeats, remains to be seen.

On-loan Newcastle United winger Ryan Fraser has been ruled out though, after leaving The Den on crutches following Saints' 2-1 defeat at Millwall.

Match Odds

Liverpool have won their last six home matches against Southampton and the Reds are 3/5 to make it seven on the bounce by winning inside 90 minutes on Wednesday. The visitors are priced at 4/1 to record a shock victory on Merseyside, while the draw - which would send the tie to extra time on the night - is available at 10/3.

Both teams have scored in Liverpool's last eight home games and it's 1/2 for a ninth-straight BTTS - Yes there, while over 3.5 goals can be found at 11/10.

Half-time both teams to score - Yes @ 5/2

It could really be any score on Wednesday night. Liverpool are on a high after their Carabao Cup success and smashed Championship opposition last time out in the competition, beating Norwich City 5-2 at home, but Klopp is likely to field a much-changed team in midweek, and that should entice the Saints, who have only been outscored by Leicester City and Ipswich Town in the second-tier this season.

Even with their strongest XI, and at Anfield, the Reds have shown themselves to be vulnerable from the off. They've conceded in the first-half in four of their last five games there in all competitions, including against the Canaries in the fourth-round.

It's also pretty rare that the Reds are held in the first-half, while there have been 12 matches where both Liverpool and the opposition have scored before the interval.

Southampton should smell blood from the start so don't be surprised if they take an early lead, but equally, Klopp's relentless Reds are just as likely to bite back in double time.

Half-time BTTS - Yes in Liverpool vs Southampton at 5-2

Cody Gakpo to score 2+ goals (90 mins) @ 17/2

There is likely to be a lot of responsibility on the shoulders of the Dutchman, who could be joined by a host of inexperienced players. In fact, Gakpo could be the sole surviving member of Liverpool's five senior forwards with Diaz unlikely to start, Nunez and Salah still doubtful to make the squad, and Jota definitely out.

Therefore, the 24-year-old should get ample minutes to make his mark on the game. He certainly made an impression in the Carabao Cup, scoring in every round before a relatively disappointing display in the final, where he blanked.

Gakpo has a good chance to get back on the cup goalscoring trail against Championship opposition, albeit one at the top end of the table, and before Sunday, he had fired in each of his last two games.

He already has a brace to his name this season, scoring twice against LASK in the Europa League in November, and he could repeat that feat at Anfield on Wednesday.

Cody Gakpo to score 2+ goals in Liverpool vs Southampton at 17-2
